(Unsolicited) Reviews
"If you have not checked out Mason, I highly recommend it. Mason is a Linux based firewall, but none like you've ever used. In short, you put Mason into learning mode and run the services to the Internet you wish to support. Mason will then take these log entries and turn them into a set of packet filtering rules. Pretty cool eh? No ACK compliment rules to worry about, no "what was that service port again?" decisions to worry about, simply plug it in, let it learn and off you go. :)" - - Chris Brenton, cbrenton@sover.net "Tonight I tried out your Mason package and I got to tell you it is the best thing I have seen in a long time. I tried it on a test machine and it worked flawlessly. Usually things are fun for novelty reasons but this thing is awesome! Me and my colleagues are always setting up some type of firewall and I am going to blow them away with this one. Problem with firewalls is one always forgets a policy, port, etc... especially being a field computer person, with Mason it pretty much takes care of most of the work for you. All I can say is I cant tell you how cool this is.

Coach Jeff Tedford's Comments on Today's Recruits Feb. 5, 2003 Below are selected quotes from Coach Jeff Tedford's press conference regarding letters of intent. On Wide Receivers:
I think all the wide receivers have great speed. When you talk about Devin Stearns, Noah Smith, Sean Young, Sam DeSa, ... all those guys can really run. On the secondary
The secondary guys can all really run - Brandon Myles, Kenny Frank - so really, as we're looking at all these skilled players, one of the factors in our recruiting is that they all have very good speed. On Noah Smith:
Noah Smith is a world-class runner, and really gives us the ability to stretch defenses and really puts a major threat with speed on the field. If you watch the tape you can see that he really can go deep, and has tremendous break-away speed once he catches the football.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Stearns Wins Maine State Championships,
Men's Tennis Earns NCAA Berth
LEWISTON, Maine Bates College senior Dylan Stearns of Brattleboro , Vt. , is the 16th Bobcat player in the last 19 years to win the State of Maine tennis championship, held at Bates on May 4-5. The day after the finals, the Bates squad learned they would be going to the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament at Binghamton, N.Y., for the first time ever as team. All of this serves as a grand send-off for head coach George Wigton , who is retiring from coaching after 30 years of service to Bates, 26 at the helm of the men's tennis team. Stearns, the ninth seed in the State of Maine tournament and No. 3 player for Bates, lost just one set in winning four matches over two days to take the title. He was one of six Bobcats to advance to the second round. After knocking off Colby's third-rated player, Staunton Bowen, 6-1, 6-1, Stearns topped Bates No. 5 Lonnie Klein of Riverdale, N.Y.

A 12-1 team a year ago, the Bates men's tennis team should be even stronger this year. The Bobcats return seven of their top eight volleyers from last year, including the top four seeds. As a team, the Bobcats are ranked sixth in the East Region and 20th nationally, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/NCAA Men's Division III Tennis East Region Advisory Committee 1995-96 preseason rankings. Two of those top four seeds, seniors Jeff Poleshek and captain Mark Erelli, will be trying to return to the NCAA Championships, which both of them qualified for last year. Poleshek is ranked sixth in the East and 33rd nationally, while Erelli is ranked 21st in the East. Poleshek, the Bobcats' number one singles player for the third year in a row, will be looking to add to his career total of 57 singles' victories, which places him fifth in Bates history. "He is a very powerful player. He probably has the most powerful forehand stroke of any player who has played at Bates," Coach George Wigton said. Poleshek also brings a strong, although somewhat inconsistent, service game to the court. According to Wigton, he is a very complete player, capable of beating anyone. Also an extremely successful player at Bates, Erelli finished last season with the best single season winning percentage in Bates history while amassing a record of 13-1, his only loss coming in the finals of the NESCAC Tournament. Erelli's 63 victories place him third on the Bobcats' all-time win list. Bates' number two seed was also a member of the Academic All-America and NESCAC All-Academic Teams.

about his search for Ethernet test gear.
I'll put in a plug for the Cabletron LAN-MD. It's a suitcase-sized box that
can thoroughly test cables and transceivers. A pair of LAN-MD's can exercise
transceivers in place and tell you things that you'll never otherwise know.
Which of your transceivers have broken or out-of-spec collision detect
circuitry? How will you find them? Hint: Can a computer tell if its
transceiver has this problem?
Now that we're in the age of level I vs level II vs 802.3, we have abundant
opportunities to pair up Ethernet controllers with the wrong kind of transceiver, multiplexor, or cable. Physical and link-level problems like this are often inscrutable to higher-level tools. Imagine a chart of the ISO reference model. Stick a pushpin in it for every

HIS 132: Modern Global History 1500 to the Present This course will examine several of the most important issues of the last five hundred years of history. Rather than trying to cover every major event in every country over that time, I will focus on three non-western countries and the themes of imperialist expansion and response. These five hundred years will be divided into three distinct periods and examined in separate units. The first third will examine the years from 1500 to 1750. During this time European countries developed modern commercial and eventually industrial technologies. At the same time, the Asian, African, and South American continents organized their societies to provide for their own welfare. However, as European economic and political power was brought to bear upon these other continents the Modern World-System was formed. Next, the course will examine a much shorter period of time, 1750 to World War I. During this time imperialism reached its zenith as European technological skills were used to support nationalist aims. Under this set of policies counties in Africa, South America, and Asia were either directly or indirectly administered and exploited by the European powers.
