Ben Stein is a psycho jackass
by Lukas Hauser
November 29, 1999
Holy shit, do I hate Ben Stein!
This self-absorbed, utterly idiotic "smart guy" is a chump. Unaware that the whole world dislikes him, Ben Stein goes throughout his life thinking that he got where he got because he's intelligent and hardworking. Naw, Ben, we're laughing at you.
Fellow chump and Time writer-at-large Joel Stein writes about the unrelated Ben in this week's issue. Some juicy tidbits emerge:
  • Although left-leaning in college, the whining Stein for some reason converted to retard Republicanism and joined the Nixon White House as a speechwriter. After Nixon resigned in disgrace, Stein was fired from the Ford administration for crying.
  • Stein moved from Washington to Los Angeles and became a Penthouse columnist, where he met up with auteur director John Hughes who hired him for the life-changing Ferris Bueller's Day Off. But the highlight was Stein's cluelessness: "When Stein received applause from the crew members," Joel Stein writes in Time, "he figured it was for successfully explaining the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act, but they were just impressed that he could act so boring." What a sucker!
  • Stein is a fucking jackass. He gets his feewings so hurt every time he loses on "Win Ben Stein's Money" that his therapist wrote him a self-affirming little note which he carries in his wallet at all times: "This game does not measure your real intelligence, which no one would ever question."

REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE YIZKOR PESACH 5760 Recently the following a. column by Ben Stein appeared in the Washington Post that is most appropriate for us to consider before Yizkor. Ben Stein is the host of the Cable TV Quiz show, “Win Ben Stein’s Money.” He lives in the rough, tough world of Hollywood producers. And so I am sure that he is no sentimental softie. If you don torah know who Ben Stein is, you may remember who his father was. His father was Herbert Stein, the economist, who was chairman of the President s Council of Economic Advisers, back in the Nixon administration. Economists are pretty practical people, aren torah they? They are not like poets. They are people who pay attention to the bottom line, who care about profit and loss statements; they are not usually overly sentimental. Let me read you Ben Stein s column, which moved me very much and which I am sure will touch all of us this day and perhaps every day. Listen to the column. “My father, Herbert Stein, a brainy economist, once said that the goal of people who work should always be to do something that returns more value than its cost of effort. I never could figure out how to apply that rule in the swamp of Hollywood business. But I did figure out a way, about ten years ago, to do something that always provided psychic and emotional income far beyond its cost. CALL MY PARENTS.

How to Win Ben Stein's Money
Winning Ben Stein's $5,000 is considerably harder than taking candy from a baby. To do it, you have to last through two rounds of questions, and beat Ben Stein in the best of ten test of knowledge. In round one, three players at their podiums play a round of toss-up questions. Ben Stein hosts this round, and Jimmy Kimmel announces the categories as they are revealed. Question values in this round range from $50 to $150 of Ben Stein's money. Each question is two parts. The first part is the main question, the one that the category is named for. This is the one worth $50-$150. If a contestant buzzes in and gets the question right, then they answer a follow-up question, worth $50. If the contestant gets this follow-up question wrong, or if no one gets the main question right, then this question is also a toss-up, still worth $50. After time is up for round one, the player with the least amount of Ben Stein's money is eliminated from the game, and Ben takes the amount of his money that they've won and puts it back up in his total. In the second round, Ben throws caution in the wind as he becomes a common contestant to defend his money. On most days, this is followed with "Stay tuned, you might learn something!" In round two, Jimmy Kimmel hosts, and announces the names of the categories. Also, beginning in round two and through to the end of the show, Ben Stein has no advance knowledge of any of the questions that are asked. In round two, the questions are worth $250 to $500 of Ben's money, if the contestants get them right. Ben will tell you, "If I get them right, my total stays the same, and thankfully, none of my money is taken away." There are no follow-up questions in this round, and an entirely new set of categories is revealed.

FRANKLIN — TV personality Ben Stein came to Carter House yesterday, but not to tape an episode of his Comedy Central game show, Win Ben Stein's Money Stein, a self-described Civil War buff, was in town to lend his support to preserving the Franklin Battlefield. ''Franklin will get some of Ben Stein's money. Franklin got $1,000, and it's about to get $1,000 more,'' said Stein, standing in the Carter House Visitors Center yesterday wearing sneakers with his snappy suit in deference to the rainy day. Stein, who grew up in Maryland reading about the War Between the States, said he became interested in touring the site after the Civil War Preservation Trust earlier this month named it one of the top 10 endangered Civil War battlefields in the country.

Ben Stein talks about becoming a father
(CNN) According to his own estimation, Ben Stein was a nobody in Hollywood after playing a character role in "Ferris Buehler's Day Off." Then came a little boy named Tommy, and Stein became a dad. Currently the host of Comedy Central's "Win Ben Stein's Money," the actor-writer spoke with CNN's Bobbie Battista on Father's Day about being a father, and his book, "Tommy and Me: The Making of a Dad." BOBBIE BATTISTA: This book is subtitled "The Making of a Dad," and I think most people would assume that being a dad is something that ... comes naturally. But that isn't necessarily the case with you. STEIN: Not at all. Well it didn't come easily for us to get our son, because he was adopted and it was quite a struggle to get him. And once we had him, it was not easy for me to be a dad. I felt kind of estranged and inadequate. And I found that like almost everything else in life, it was a job. It just happens to be the best job and especially the best paid job in the world.

Web posted at: 9:02 p.m. EDT (0102 GMT) HOLLYWOOD (CNN) Here's the gig: You're on a game show hosted by lawyer and actor Ben Stein the guy who played the clueless economics teacher in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." You're also playing against Ben Stein. And your prize is Ben Stein's money. It's not a bizarre dream it's an actual brand-new game show on Comedy Central called "Win Ben Stein's Money." The show has a dry sense of humor and a razor wit, characteristics that Stein, a former Nixon speechwriter, modestly suggests he shares. "Why have I done it? Call me crazy," he said. For the first two rounds, contestants try to answer questions in such obscure categories as "The Poison Ivy League," "Family Feuds not hosted by Richard Dawson," and "The Boys to Men from Brazil." Stein plays along, playing to beat the finalist in the third round. Contestants can win up to $5,000. If Stein wins, he keeps what's left of the $5,000. Stein is also paid a host's salary. "If you look at the people's faces while they're playing," he said, "you get a very good idea of why capitalism defeated communism. They're very motivated at the prospect of money for not much work.

Bio:

With an unmistakable monotone voice and surprisingly droll deadpan delivery, gray-haired and bespectacled former Nixon speechwriter Ben Stein made a splash in the entertainment industry, becoming a well-known personality because of his numerous scene-stealing cameo appearances in film and television. The actor/lawyer/author/speechwriter/columnist/professor donned yet another hat in 1997, when he began working as a game show host and regular contestant on Comedy Central's popular "Win Ben Stein's Money". Stein's unforgettable cameo as the sleep-inducing teacher in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986) made his face and voice readily familiar to moviegoers, and his mostly ad libbed scenes (painstakingly taking attendance and giving an amazingly boring economics lecture) would live on among the funniest movie moments of the recent past.
