Greetings from Berkeley!
I've been busy with astronomy projects, writing, and speaking. Most of my time, I'm a stay-at-home Daddy. Because of this, I'm unable to answer all my e-mail ... I read it all, but I just can't answer every letter. I've reached the point where I rarely update this web page. In advance, my apologies. To try to head off some questions, here are some answers to common questions: You can get the scoop on my first book, Cuckoo's Egg Books include Silicon Snake Oil . It's about astronomy, computers, the Internet, and getting lost in a cave. I've also written High Tech Heretic: Why Computers Don't Belong in Schools" I make Klein Bottles you can see them at kleinbottles.com. For astrophysics, check out my recent

Clifford Stoll ("CS"), Author, The Cuckoo's Egg, Silicon Snake Oil. Host: ...Ponder this, that I've wondered about for a long time, if you will: It's the problem of not doing original research. If a thousand people convey a piece of information, or a collection of information from one to another, at a 99.9% [error-free] rate, which sounds like a pretty good, error-free rate, but if a thousand people transmit that informationwhat have you got at the end? And I think this is something that, in a way, you're addressing because you don't know the sources of the information you get on the Internet a lot of times. CS : People think that because there [are] documents available online, that almost automatically all they have to do is copy from an online document and paste it into something else. To get the inside scoop, that all they have to do is peruse a fact that's been posted to the Internet, or to the Usenet, and they'llright off, see the facts of the situation.

Maybe you think I have a funny idea about adventure, but I think this counts just as much as climbing a mountain or sinking a boat. Mr. Stoll is an astrophysicist turned systems manager at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, but becomes a one-man security force tracking down a computer cracker when he discovers a 75 cent accounting error. This is in the earlier years of computer security, but very informative and reads like a thriller. The Cuckoo's Egg is well written and is considered a classic. Mr. Stoll is also the same person who was doing "thoughts" at the end of The Site TV magazine which used to be on MSNBC. After seeing him on The Site, I could see why he had just the right personality to go after this cracker!

    HIGH TECH HERETIC:
Why Computers Don't Belong in the Classroom and Other Reflections by a Computer Contrarian
    An interview with Clifford Stoll
Clifford Stoll is an astronomer and pioneer Internet user. But, unlike most high-tech insiders, this University of California Berkeley astronomer isn't sure of the network's value. He is, in fact, more than just skeptical of the highly touted benefits of computers. And, Mr. Stoll is troubled by what he sees the real damage they may cause to American education. He expresses his doubts in a volume entitled High Tech Heretic: Why Computers Don't Belong in the Classroom and Other Reflections by a Computer Contrarian . He argues that instead of spending time in front of computers, youngsters need interaction with their peers and with their teachers. He argues that computing offers instant gratification instead of solving the real problems in American education which require interaction with teachers and improved discipline. In this interview the author talks about some of what he sees as the negative impacts of the high-tech revolution.
Q: Mr. Stoll, you write that "Our nation now spends about three billion dollars a year to wire our classrooms with an aim of making our country's students computer literate. But how much computing does a high school student need to know?" you ask.

The great midcentury social critic Paul Goodman said that technology, rightly considered, is a branch of moral philosophy. Precisely that perception animates Stoll's feisty, conversational, commonsensical, and highly amusing commentaries on the technological juggernaut conjured by the cant phrase information highway . Stoll may not think he is a moralist, but he unequivocally says that computers don't belong in classrooms because they stifle human nature, thwart human development, and waste human resourcesmost notably, money that ought to be spent on teachers, librarians, and books. His strongest indictment of computers, not just in the classroom but throughout society, is that they, like television, constitute an isolating, disintegrative force that weakens human communities, from families to national electorates. As one who has been programming since the mid-'60s, Stoll grants that the computer is a useful tool but feels that making much more of it is folly. As for the World Wide Web and the Internet, Stoll argues that they purvey far more trivia than useful information. Skeptical but not cynical, Stoll speaks right reason to computer enthusiasts.

    http://www.technology-teaching-research-humanities.com/high tech heretic.htm
Stoll, Clifford. High Tech Heretic: Reflections of a Computer Contrarian . New York: Random House, 1999. 221pp. For a journal devoted in large part to teaching and technology it might seem strange to review a book that sits in opposition to many of the values readers of this journal hold to be true. High Tech Heretic: Confessions of a Computer Contrarian Silicon Snake Oil Colleges and universities are certainly involved in the scramble to provide distance education courses and degree programs to a market that has yet to be defined. One consequence is a blurring of the distinction between training and education. Who benefits from distance education? It would seem likely that various courses are suitable for modification in distance education formats but these are largely in the area of training and re-certification programs. What would a distance education degree in English be like or even be worth in our academic culture? The benefits to colleges and universities seems to be an ability to attract a larger market share of students without pressuring campus resources such as parking and dormitory space. The strongest point made by Stoll concerns a larger problem that I characterize as the attenuation of experience. Stoll argues that if you really want to teach astronomy one should begin by looking at the sky, not by showing a computer program animation of the sky. This is an important point because in the rush to technology enhanced education, experience in the real world with real people and hands on activities is sometimes sacrificed. Technology can be used to enhance education and provide alternatives when actual real life experiences are not easily or practically engaged, but when they become the method of choice over experiences in the world they diminish our ability to make vital connections between knowledge and the real world we actually live in. Students can find numerous sites on the Internet dealing with multi-culturalism, for example, but no Internet site can replace the knowledge gained by simply talking with some one face to face.
