DIE FLEDERMAUS (THE BAT) Purchase The Cast Album Sheet Music The Movie (DVD) The Movie (VHS) Book by Lyrics by Music by JOHANN STRAUSS Based on a comedy by R. BENDIX and the Vaudeville by HENRI MEILHAC and First produced on 5th April, 1874, at the Theatre an der Wien, Vienna, with Jani Szika, Marie Geistinger and Karoline Charles-Hirsch. London production on 18th December, 1876, at the Alhambra Theatre (in English), with Kate Munroe, Miss Beaumont and Miss Robson. I N a fashionable watering-place, described as "near a big city", lives Gabriel von Eisenstein, a wealthy man of independent means, with his attractive wife Rosalinda, and their maid Adele. The light-hearted story of Die Fledermaus At Prince Orlofsky's ball the fun is fast and furious. As the "Marquis Renard" von Eisenstein has been presented by Dr. Falke to a young woman in whom he detects a likeness to his wife's maid, Adele; who indeed is she. In a charming little song she asks the Marquis what lady's maid ever had a hand or foot like hers, to say nothing of her Grecian profile, her figure and her frock (which is, of course, Rosalinda's). Later in the evening Prince Orlofsky introduces the guest of honour, a Hungarian Countess wearing a mask. Von Eisenstein is greatly attracted by the Countess, little suspecting that the mask conceals the features of his own wife. Rosalinda's appearance at the party has been stage-managed by Dr. Falke as the final move in his revenge. Von Eisenstein flirts outrageously with the Countess and, as a result of his advances, she sinks down on a sofa, pressing her hand to her heart. She pretends that her heart has always been her weakness and she aks von Eisenstein to take her pulse. During the operation she manages to annexe his repeater watch, and thus holds a valuable piece of evidence of her husband's misdemeanours. This enchanting tik-tak duet is one of the highlights of Johann Strauss' score.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Munich, 11 June 1864; died Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 8 September 1949). His father, a professional horn player, gave him a musical grounding exclusively in the classics, and he composed copiously from the age of six. He went briefly to university, but had no formal tuition in composition. He had several works given in Munich, including a symphony, when he was 17, and the next year a wind serenade in Dresden and a violin concerto in Vienna. At 20, a second symphony was given in New York and he conducted the Meiningen Orchestra in a suite for wind. In 1885 he became conductor of that orchestra, but soon left and visited Italy. He had been influenced by Liszt ian and Wagner ian thinking; one result was Aus ltalien , which caused controversy on its premiere in 1887. By then Strauss was a junior conductor at the Munich Opera. Other tone poems followed: Macbeth Don Juan and come from the late 1880s. It is

Richard Strauss Life Works Instrumental Operas ... Home Page Richard Strauss Life
Richard Strauss enjoyed early success as both conductor and composer, in the second capacity influenced by the work of Wagner He developed the symphonic or tone-poem to an unrivalled level of expressiveness and after 1900 achieved great success with a series of impressive operas, at first on a grand scale, but later tending to a more classical restraint. His relationship with the National Socialist government in Germany was at times ambiguous, a fact that protected him but led to post-war difficulties and self-imposed exile in Switzerland, from which he returned home to Bavaria only in the year of his death, 1949. Richard Strauss Works
Richard Strauss created an immediate sensation with his opera Salome, based on the play of that name by Oscar Wilde. Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose) remains the best known of the operas of Richard Strauss, familiar in excerpt from its famous concert waltz-sequence. MIDI FILE - Rosenkavalier: Valzer From Salome comes the orchestral Dance of the Seven Veils, an important moment in the drama.
