CHRISTMAS IN COPANY By Thomas Scott One of my earliest memories of Christmas, was the night Joe Edgar came down to ask my eldest sister, Sissie (Eliza Jane) to be his wife. I had never seen Joe Edgar before; he was a big tall good-looking man, over six feet tall. He had some neighbour with him. We, Gilbert, Florrie and myself were sent to bed early. It was next day we were told Sissie was leaving us. Christmas in our house was sort of magic, we were all so sure Santa was a real person. I remember well the day my mother explained to me it was only our father and mother who filled our stockings and put the presents on the Christmas tree. As Christmas approached preparations for it started some days ahead. Mostly a goose was kept for the dinner, the rest of the geese and turkeys were sold in the Turkey Market as it was called. Everybody on the small farms kept turkeys, geese, ducks and fowl of every sort. Every year buyers would come to town and hold a Christmas market for them. The geese were killed and plucked and the large feathers were kept by themselves.The wings were used for dusters and very effective they were. The "down" or breast feathers were kept for making into pillows etc.

ACCTG 416: Accounting Theory (Term I) ACCTG 702: Topics in Accounting Research (Term II) Research Interests My teaching and research interests are primarily involved with financial accounting and reporting, although I have taught and researched managerial accounting issues as well. More broadly I am interested in investigating financial reporting alternatives from the perspective of individual firms, standard setters, and various users. My initial published research investigated economic incentives for the timing and extent of pension reporting by American and Canadian firms. My interest in financial reporting has led me toward broader research into the role of accounting and the accounting profession in society. My teaching has corresponded well with my research interests since I have taught the accounting theory course since coming to Alberta. In this course the emphasis is on placing accounting in a broader economic context by emphasizing economic rationales for why accounting is the way it is. More recently, my work in pension accounting has led me into the broader area of management compensation. I have recently completed an extensive literature review of this area that is being published in the next issue of the Journal of Accounting Literat ure. I am also conducting empirical research in the management compensation area on the efficacy and appropriateness of alternate compensation mechanisms and appropriate measures of performance, allowing me to integrate financial reporting and managerial accounting issues.

Industrial Technology Department PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND Dr. Scott has taught in the Industrial Technology Department at Ohio University since 1993. During that time he has been responsible for the development and delivery of several courses including Power Transmission, Industrial Electronics (Analog and Digital), Digital Instrumentation and Controls, Electronic Applications in Manufacturing, and Robotics. Dr. Scott was promoted to Associate Professor in 1999. Prior to coming to Ohio University, Dr. Scott held various engineering design and management positions at Allison Gas Turbine, General Motors Corporation, during a 28-year period. His responsibilities included management of engine/airframe integration; management of the research, analysis, and application of digital controls to gas turbine engines; and design/development of internal flow systems using analytical and experimental techniques. May 3, 2002 Ohio University Russ College of Engineering and Technology Award Recipient 2001-2002 The recipient of th Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award for academic year 2001-2002 is Dr. Thomas E. Scott, Associate Professor in the Industrial Technology Department. This award recognizes the efforts of faculty to provide Russ College students with outstanding teaching and advising. The students of the college select the recipient. The selection criteria include teaching evaluations, written comments from students, observations from departmental representatives, and interviews by a select student committee with the candidates. Dr. Scott is well regarded by his students, and consistently gets high scores in student course evaluations. Students find him to be enthusiastic, fair, available and approachable. This is the second time Dr. Scott has received the award (previously 1994-1995). He came to Ohio University in September of 1993 after a career at General Motors, and brings a practical experienced base teaching style to his courses. The award includes a plaque, the addition of his name to the permanent list of past recipients in the lobby of the Russ College, and an honorarium.
