As a boy growing up in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Billy Bob Thornton was naturally drawn to music. As a child, he and his younger brother Jimmy were eager participants in the family ritual of listening to albums each night before going to bed, and grew up listening to everything from Elvis Presley, Ray Price and Jim Reeves, to Captain Beefheart, the Mothers of Invention and of course, The Beatles. At age 9, Thornton got his first drum kit and formed a band called The McCoveys, after baseball legend Willie McCovey. Ving Rhames Billy Bob Thornton His mother, a self-professed psychic, predicted that her son would one day cross paths with her favorite actor, Burt Reynolds. Oddly enough, the prediction would hold true when Billy Bob Thornton would log several guest appearances on Reynolds’ 80s sitcom Evening Shade . Prior to the television spots, Thornton had worked hard for years. It is not unusual for actors to have to climb their way up the ladder, but Thornton’s road was bumpier than most, and his climb was a long and arduous one. Thornton grew up penniless in backwoods Alpine, Arkansas. Raised in a poor family, Billy Bob didn’t have much growing up. His family stayed with his grandparents (with no indoor plumbing or electricity no less), and, although his father had steady work as a history teacher, it didn’t bring in much money. One of his few friends during this period was Tom Epperson, who would later become a close colleague and screen-writing partner. Although he did take some acting classes, after high school Thornton took the practical road and got a steady job. However, as it turned out, practical just wasn’t in Billy Bob’s nature. After marrying in 1975, he was divorced two years later with a daughter. He decided to go back to University and major in Psychology, but that only lasted two semesters. Deciding that rock n’ roll was the way to go, he and his old friend Tom (mentioned above), embarked on a New York adventure which was over before it got started. Humbled, Thornton went back to steady work, thinking his carefree days were over.

The man that shares Billy Bob Thornton's features traverses the world that surrounds him as such a phantom that nobody notices him. Dull and stripped of all emotion, he is the perfect subject for a black and white film noir. Crane the neighborhood barber is the prisoner of an insipid life. Married without love to Doris (Frances McDormand), one day he sees the opportunity to escape his destiny while by becoming a business partner in a dry cleaning venture. In order to get the necessary funds, he decides to blackmail Big Dave (James Gandolfini), Doris' boss and with whom she has an extra-marital affair. But obviously, as usual in Coen brothers' films, the plans will not go as planned. The Man Who Wasn't There is above all an exercise of style. The purpose of the characters, the story and the décor is only to recreate the troubling atmosphere of film noir. The slow rhythm, music and the use of black and white film pay homage to the genre. The use of the light and shadows, a superb photograph and the rigidity of Billy Bob's face combine wonderfully to make each shot an image of the epoch. The film locations, like Old Town Orange in California, reinforce the authenticity of the whole, instead of merely filming on a stage.
