Ted Turner Media Mogul and Philanthropist
Robert Edward "Ted" Turner III has always done things his own way. The brash billionaire, champion yachtsman and founder of Cable News Network and Turner Network Television set an independent course early in his career, betting big on himself and taking daring gambles that have not always succeeded. Known as "The Mouth of the South" and "Captain Outrageous" for his notorious volubility and singular opinions, Turner built a communications empire from his father’s over-stretched billboard business and is now creatively engaged in giving away the fortune he earned from it. "Few Americans," wrote Newsweek , "have cut such a swath through life."
"That list [Forbes magazine's list of the wealthiest Americans] is destroying our country! These new super-rich won’t loosen up their wads because they’re afraid they’ll reduce their net worth and go down on the list. That’s their Super Bowl."
Ted Turner
Turner demonstrated his individuality early on. At the military-oriented McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn., "Terrible Ted" is remembered for his odd habits, which included practicing amateur taxidermy and growing lawn grass in his room. Brown University asked him to leave after he was caught with a woman in his private quarters. He won the America’s Cup in 1977 with his yacht

Associated Press CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Media magnate Ted Turner, interested in doing a film on the Confederate submarine Hunley, will lend his name to the recovery effort. As much as $10 million will be needed to raise, restore and display the Hunley, the first sub to sink an enemy warship. Turner, a Civil War buff, will allow his name to be used in the hunt for private donations, state Sen. Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston, said Monday. The state Hunley Commission hopes to raise most of the money from corporate America, McConnell said. Turner has already made Civil War films, including ``Gettysburg'' and a television movie about the rebel prison at Andersonville, Ga. The announcement came at the Charleston Museum as officials unveiled an art and model exhibit that features Conrad Wise Chapman's historic 1863 painting of the Hunley as it sat on a harborside wharf. The print is on loan from the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Va.

(CBS) Maverick Ted Turner has many nicknames: “Captain Outrageous,” “Terrible Ted,” and “The Mouth From The South.” He is a fascinating, unpredictable man.
Mike Wallace and Turner recently took a walk in midtown Manhattan. They talked about Turner’s job as vice chairman of AOL-Time Warner. (Though he resigned last week, Turner still holds the title until May.) “Vice chairman is kind of a title without portfolio, like the emperor of Japan,” Turner said.
He’s in charge of just about nothing. He doesn’t even have a voice any more in the running of his baby, Cable News Network. He said his formal role has been that of advisor – but it’s not really what he wants to be. When the plan to merge Time Warner with AOL was first announced, Turner voted for it with unbridled joy. “I did it with as much or more excitement and enthusiasm as on the night I first made love 42 years ago,” he said at the time. Now he says: “Well, you know, on the eve of something like that, it - it was very clear that- that it was going to go through. So I might as well have gone along with it,” he says.

Ted Turner: Prince of the Global Village
Visionaries are possessed creatures, men and women in the thrall of belief so powerful that they ignore all elseeven reasonto ensure that reality catches up with their dreams. The vision may be the glory-driven daring of a Saddam Hussein, who foolishly tried to extend his rule by conquest and plunder, or the seize-the-day bravery of a Boris Yeltsin, who struggled to free a society from seven decades of iron ideology. But always behind the action is an idea, a passionate sense of what is eternal in human nature and also of what is coming but as yet unseen, just over the horizon. A generation ago, social theorist Marshall McLuhan proclaimed the advent of a "global village," a sort of borderless world in which communications media would transcend the boundaries of nations. "Ours is a brand-new world of allatonceness," he wrote. "`Time' has ceased, `space' has vanished. We now live in...a simultaneous happening." McLuhan underestimated the enduring appeal of the status quo and the stubborn persistence of the petty side of human nature. The fusion of television and satellites did not produce instantaneous brotherhood, just a slowly dawning awareness of the implications of a world transfixed by a single TV image. It took another visionary, and the band of dreamers and opportunists he gathered around him, to demonstrate that McLuhan was wrong only temporarily. In 1991, one of the most eventful years of this century, the world witnessed the dramatic and transforming impact on those events of live television by satellite. The very definition of news was rewrittenfrom something that has happened to something that is happening at the very moment you are hearing of it. A war involving the fiercest air bombardment in history unfolded in real timebefore the cameras. The motherland of communism overthrew its leaders and their doctrinebefore the cameras. To a considerable degree, especially in Moscow, momentous things happened precisely because they were being seen as they happened.

update Ted Turner is resigning as vice chairman of AOL Time Warner, capping a tumultuous year for the beleaguered media giant. The announcement came just shortly after the company reported a net loss of $98.7 billion for 2002. Those results included a $45.5 billion fourth-quarter charge related primarily to depreciation in the value of its America Online unit, as well as a first-quarter charge of $54 billion in accordance with accounting rules changes that took effect last year. Revenue for the fourth quarter increased 8 percent, to $11.4 billion, from the same period last year, compared with Wall Street estimates of $11.2 billion, according to a consensus of analysts polled by First Call Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBIDTA) for the quarter rose 16 percent, to $2.8 billion, on the strength of double-digit growth at all of the company's divisions, except for AOL, where EBITDA declined. EBIDTA is one of the most closely watched measures of the performance of media companies.

By Patrik Jonsson Once, to hammer home his point about a pending telecom bill, Ted Turner dropped to the floor of a senator's office, clutched at his throat, and rolled around like an infant, crying, "You're going to kill me!" In the end, though, it was not overzealous lawmakers, but the media industry itself, that sent the television magnate into exile. The quirky founder of CNN - a man who once challenged Rupert Murdoch to a Las Vegas boxing match - stepped down earlier this month as vice chairman of AOL-Time Warner, a media giant that some say had grown too big for its own good.
