By: Jacqueline Chauser Existing at the bottom of the social scale is a very conflicting experience for second generation immigrants of American culture. On the one hand, they perceive themselves as Americans, living out their lives in their native land. On the other hand, the Anglo culture sees the second generation immigrants by their skin tone and ethnic background only, often looking down on them. Being an American citizen as much as the people who reject and suppress them, second generation immigrants struggle to find their place in American culture and establish an identity for themselves. Struggling with their identity crisis, second generation immigrants experience a double consciousness. They know who they are on the inside, yet at the same time understanding how the outside world perceives them. While there are several different ways immigrants have dealt with this condition, the solution examined in this essay is when a person becomes what they are not in order to become who they are. Lupe Velez, a Mexican actress popular during the 40’s, and Joseph Kurihara a WWI vet who was imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp during the Pacific war, are discussed in order to examine two different examples of the same method. Born in San Luis Potosi, Lupe Velez experienced a modest upbringing. She attended a Catholic school for only a few years before she was forced to begin working to help support the family after her father disappeared. Velez was working in a chorus line when an American agent led her to Hollywood. Although Velez stared in several different movies all during the 30’s, her most popular role was Carmelita in the

I enjoyed working with him because he understood instantly when I'd say things like 'I want it simple and plastic and white'." 'Lupe' was shot in December 1965 using Andy's sync-sound Auricon camera which resulted in a very poor quality sountrack. The Auricon recorded an optical soundtrack directly on the film during shooting but optical tracks required black and white processing to avoid distortion whereas 'Lupe' was shot and processed in colour. It was based on the story of of Lupe Velez who planned to commit the most beautiful suicide but ended up dying with her head in the toilet vomiting. It was shot in Panna Grady's apartment in the old Dakota building. Andy: "Panna was a hostess of the sixties who put uptown intellectuals together with Lower East side types - she seemed to adore the drug-related writers in particular." Although the film was written by Ronald Tavel who wrote the scenarios for many of Warhol's early works, Andy Warhol had also conferred with author Robert Heide about writing the script according to a letter sent to the Village Voice by Heide:
