Elfi von Dassanowsky Legendary Austrian Film Innovator, Opera Singer She has been called a "Renaissance woman, "a film pioneer" and a " leading figure in postwar European culture." The list of Elfi von Dassanowsky 's talents and achievements support such superlatives as few biographies rarely do: opera singer, pianist, actress, film studio founder, producer, musical theater creator, teacher, cultural diplomat, humanitarian. Born in Vienna, Austria, Elfi was at age 15, the youngest woman admitted to Vienna's famed Academy of Music. While still a student, she was chosen by film director Karl Hartl to teach to his rising new star, Curd Jurgens. Her budding operatic career was halted for extended labor service when she declined membership in Nazi organizations, But her talent and beauty allowed her a second chance, and UFA Studios in Berlin offered her a start film contract in 1944, which she also rejected. Today Elfi is an arts consultant, writer and active member of international cultural organizations including the Austrian American Film Association. Currently penning an autobiography that has already garnered media interest, she plans on producing again, this time with her son, Robert, a writer and Professor of film at the University of Colorado. Elfi has been honored by the cities of Los Angeles and Vienna, as well as by the State of California which declared February 2, 1996, "Elfi von Dassanowsky Day." She is the recipient of the Austrian Film Archive Lifetime Achievement Medal and the UNESCO Mozart Medal for her promotion of peace through the art. As the world press has often noted, Elfi continues to be an international role model to women in the arts and society.

A ustrian-born Elfi (Elfriede Maria) von Dassanowsky (1924- ) came to the U.S. via Canada in 1955. By then she had already had such a multifaceted career that it is almost impossible to give her a label. In an article about von Dassanowsky, Robert Hoffmann Elfi von Dassanowsky was interviewed by Hyde Flippo, the author and webmaster of The German-Hollywood Connection. (January 1998) (Also see the von Dassanowsky links below.) Interview with Elfi von Dassanowsky Flippo: You have had an extraordinary range of career accomplishments. Looking back, which one achievement are you proudest of and why? von Dassanowsky: Looking back at my work there are two things I am most proud ofone I intended, one I only later understood. Firstly, the founding of the film studio, the theater stages, the work with the Allied Command, the opera, the radio, were all meant to help support a strong Austrian cultural identity after the war. Certainly, I had a great creative desire, but it was also clear to me that artistic expression was at the root of rebuilding the nation. The second aspect is that of being successful as a woman in traditional male roles. I followed my dreams and ambitions because I had to and because there was a need for the things I was doing. Much later, actually in Hollywood, I realized I had also forged some new possibilities for women in the arts.

Februar 1924 geboren, war Elfi von Dassanowsky im Alter von 15 Jahren die jüngste Frau, die in die berühmte Wiener Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst , als Protegée des renommierten Konzertpianist Emil von Sauer , einem Schüler des Komponisten Franz Liszt , zugelassen wurde. Während sie noch eine Schülerin war, wurde sie von dem Wien-Film Regisseur Karl Hartl auserwählt, seinem aufsteigenden Star Curd Jürgens Klavierunterricht zu erteilen, damit dieser das Instrument auf der Leinwand spielen könnte. Ihre Studien und ihre Karriere als angehende Künstlerin wurden durch den Arbeitsdienst abrupt unterbrochen, als sie sich gegen Mitgliedschaft in NS-Organisationen aussprach.
