During his career he won one Oscar and was nominated for a further four. One of his last notable film appearances was as Cardinal Wolsey in A Man for All Seasons(1966). In 1971 the Academy gave him an Honorary award "For superlative artistry and versatility in the creation of motion pictures". Always a large figure of a man, he achieved full-blown obesity in his later years. He capitalized on his image in various advertising campaigns hawking certain brands of wines, hot dogs, and correspondence courses. He was an aficionado of stage magic and often appeared at Hollywood's Magic Castle. He died of a heart attack in Hollywood, California (U.S.A.). His works as a director include the following films (Welles also starred in many of them):
  • Citizen Kane - won Oscar for Best Writing, Original Screenplay; nominated for best actor, best picture and best director.
  • The Lady from Shanghai
  • Macbeth
  • The Magnificent Ambersons - nominated for Oscar for best picture
  • Othello winner of the Palme d'Or, 1952 Cannes Film Festival

Welles' Influence on Hitchcock

Hitchcock has always been considered a director sui generis. John W. Hall looks at Psycho and Touch of Evil
BY JOHN W. HALL The next time you watch the beginning of Psycho Orson Welles Touch of Evil , made in 1958, just two years before Psycho . That shot, which travels several hundred yards across much of a town as we wait for the ticking bomb to explode, is so audacious that even today films like The Player explicitly refer to it. Was Hitchcock, in the opening of Psycho , trying to one-up Welles' experiment with the limits of the dolly shot? Yes, without even a shadow of a doubt. In the prepublicity for Psycho , Hitchcock proclaimed that his film would open with the longest "dolly" shot, approximately four miles, ever attempted by helicopter. Hitchcock was out to prove he could beat Welles' technical feat in distance if not in time. While the final result — with obvious dissolves between separate shots — was not quite up to his original ambition, Hitchcock's opening clearly displays the influence of Welles.

Welles, Orson Welles, Orson, , American actor, director, and producer, b. Kenosha, Wis. From childhood he evinced a precocious talent and lofty sense of self-assurance in theatrical matters. He began acting in the theater during the early 1930s, and in 1937 directed several Federal Theatre productions and organized the Mercury Theatre company in New York. In 1938 a radio adaptation of H. G. Wells 's The War of the Worlds, done in the style of a news broadcast, panicked the listening public and brought Welles national attention. For RKO he cowrote, produced, directed, and starred in his first film, Citizen Kane (1941), considered by many to be the greatest film ever made. Welles brought technical brilliance, a precise sense of casting, and a complex narrative structure to bear on a teasingly ambiguous portrait of an American tycoon. He won an Academy Award for the screenplay, but never enjoyed such acclaim again. Welles's other films include The Magnificent Ambersons Touch of Evil (1958; restored and reworked according to Welles's instructions, 1998), The Trial (1963), and
