Kansas wheat goes white: Betty is ready to produce better bread, noodles, and tortillas
    By Doug Ohlemeier Marketing Specialist
    Kansas Wheat Commission
Two Kansas hard white wheats have excellent baking characteristics for pan breads and rolls, according to a research update by Kansas State University (KSU). The project, funded by wheat producers through the Kansas Wheat Commission, examines hard white wheats—Betty and Heyne—for quality breads, Asian noodles and tortillas. A KSU-bred variety being considered for release in 2000, KS96HW115, also shows promise for Asian noodle production. KS96HW115 represents a new generation of Kansas hard white wheats in that it produces bright, white Asian salt noodles, and bright, pale, yellow alkaline noodles. None of the current Kansas hard white or hard red wheat varieties produce low-browning doughs. To Asian consumers, noodles must not turn brown or dark. Asian noodles are broadly classified as salt (Japanese-style) and alkaline (Chinese-style). Salt noodles are made with soft wheat flour and appear bright white. Alkaline noodles are made with hard wheat flour and appear bright yellow. White wheat must produce doughs that remain bright white or bright yellow after aging.

      Betty and Stewart Edward White
American Teachers Within the Perennial Tradition
In March, 1918, Betty and Stewart Edward White had their first experience with the spirit world. At a party with friends, the Ouija board, being used as a parlor game, spelled the name "Betty" over and over again. When Betty took over the pointer, it spelled out a number of messages, including the advice to try "automatic writing." For over a year Betty and Stewart experimented with "automatic writing," receiving a number of messages which proved evidential. Betty was slowly led into another method in which she entered a higher state of consciousness, speaking in her own voice or the voice of another entity. The entities communicating through Betty declined to be identified, wishing to remain anonymous, and thus were named "the Invisibles" by the the Whites.
In the higher state of perception, Betty's ordinary consciousness was set aside. "The Invisibles" led her into another, higher world, teaching her to create a new identity. Stewart recorded the messages and experiences which Betty reported in her higher state of consciousness. "The Invisibles" indicated that they were not only teaching Betty to enter a higher world of spiritual consciousness but were interested in teaching all humans how to enter this world.
Two other similar psychic researchers were active at the same time, Ruth and Darby Finley. They published a book in 1920, written anonymously, they claimed, by

    The Match Game Homepage
    Betty White
Betty White is often called the "Queen of Television." It's not hard to figure out why. In 1953, at the age of 29, she was given her first national TV series after a career in radio that started when she was 16. The show, Life with Elizabeth , was a two-year hit and led Betty to make her first appearances on a game show: after serving as a fill-in on What's My Line? , Betty became a regular on Gene Rayburn's Make the Connection . Betty settled into a career of appearances on other game shows, as well as Jack Paar's Tonight Show and annual turns at hosting the Tournament of Roses parade. In the early '60s, her frequent appearances on Password caught the eye and heart of host Allen Ludden, and the two were soon married. (Allen passed away in 1981.) Things slowed down for Betty in the early '70s, outside of a syndicated series called The Pet Set , but lightning soon struck again. As man-chasing "Happy Homemaker" Sue Ann Nivens in the wildly successful The Mary Tyler Moore Show , Betty won two Emmy awards and was suddenly one of the biggest names in TV in her upper 40's. Her variety show and special appearances also increased dramatically, and Betty was soon making the rounds of the new generation of celebrity game shows, including, of course
