He [Wong Kar-wai] is also a poet of time. No other director since the (distant) heyday of Alain Resnais has been so attuned to the effects of time on memory, sensation and emotion. Few other directors have ever imbued their movies with such a metaphysical sense of time at work: dilating, stretching, lurching, dragging, speeding by."
Tony Rayns, in Sight and Sound, upon the release of Chungking Express
Currently susceptible to some sort of millennial craze, Asian Media Access finds it an appropriate time to commemorate and reconsider the work of one of our favorite filmmakers. Intermittently, from January through March, Asian Media Access will be presenting the entire directorial work of Wong Kar-wai, one of the finest Hong Kong filmmakers of the 20 th Century and the one whose work we look most forward to in the 21 st Also, and more apropos, Wong Kar-wai's work is insistently about time. The distinctive style that he and frequent collaborator cinematographer Christopher Doyle have come up with billboards time technically: the insistent use of jump cuts, the use of different film speeds while directing actors to perform at slower paces, and the dazzling use of optical printing to create wonderful blurs of color all present time as a unfixed filmic component. By toying with film time so, they offer time as a constant complication, a dilemma, a factor in need of resolution.

Wong Kar-wai's decidedly magnificent, and perhaps notorious, sole foray into period martial arts, taken from Louis Cha's classic novel 'Eagle Shooting Heroes'. More about insistent memory than triumphant swordplay, Ashes of Time is an "action movie about inaction," about swordsmen in their twilight, seemingly at the edge of the world, marooned by thoughts tantalizingly clouded with lovesick memories, by the ache of loves lost. Every character herein pines for someone offscreen, and the desiccated landscape, the Leonesque use of close-ups and Morricone inspired scoring, and the amazing pitch-perfect performances from the most glamorous stars ever to shine down on earth make these characters resonate with the force of archetypes. Though the blur of action sequences are certainly dazzling and glorious, this is mostly a movie of lone figures staring towards unseen, sometimes internal, horizons, their hearts lodged in another time. (The narrative suitably skips or inverts a couple of beats.) A movie about and for the lovelorn, especially if the object of love is movies. For the properly susceptible, Ashes of Time is one of the swooniest movies ever made. Grandly filmed by Christopher Doyle, with a palette and scale that requires the large screen.

Wong Kar-wai's film In the Mood for Love

By STEPHEN SHORT
Pascal Guyot/AFP. Best Actor, Chinese actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai, poses after receiving his trophy for his role in "In The Mood for Love." Hong Kong director Wong Wong Kar-wai's latest feature In the Mood for Love earned movie star Tony Leung Chiu-wai the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21. Rushed to completion, the film, about love regret in 1960s Hong Kong and starring Maggie Cheung, also picked up a technical achievement prize for cinematography and editing. Time Asia reporter Stephen Short spoke to Kar-waiwhose previous hits include Chungking Express and Happy Togetherduring filming of the movie. Excerpts from the interview: TIME: I'm confused. This film was originally called Beijing Summer and it seems to have been going on for about one year. What is it now? Wong Kar-wai: It's a long story. We wanted to make a movie in Beijing two years ago and actually did shoot some scenes there Then we submitted the script to the censors in China. Actually it was more like a first draft. The authorities said some points would have to be adjusted.

Set in the straitlaced and gossipy Hong Kong of the early sixties, In the Mood for Love
Known for his unique visual flair, Wong Kar-wai, whose career began as a graphic designer and screenwriter, here abandons the impressionistic flamboyance of his earlier award-winning films, Days of Being Wild Chungking Express and Happy Together . In this oblique, sensuous, divinely crafted portrayal of shame and yearning, Wong Kar-wai has tossed the moral card clean out of the pack, caring not a fig about the pros or cons of adulterous passion and glorifying neither marital fidelity nor betrayal. Rather, he opts for a phenomenological approach to the imperceptible flowering of desire, meticulously refracting each telling glance, movement or gesture through the diamond prism of his lens.
In the Mood for Love received a Best Actor award for Tony Leung and, for its sublime art direction, the Grand Prix de la Technique at the last Cannes Film Festival, where this discussion took place in the gardens of the Grand Hotel.

Biographie

Jahrhunderts, deren Ausgaben in China erhältlich waren.

SETTING THE "MOOD"
Celebrated Hong Kong Director Wong Kar-wai Reunites With Stars Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung in the Delicate, Passionate Love Story, "In the Mood for Love"
By Wade Major
S o, I got you!" exclaims Wong Kar-wai, grinning from behind his trademark sunglasses like a college prankster. It's an admittedly strange way to open a serious discussion of an award-winning film though in the case of Wong's Cannes hit "In the Mood for Love," the unorthodox opening is wholly appropriate. "It's because of you guys in the press," he says of his choice to abandon many of his familiar stylistic signatures. "You give us challenges. Over the years I realized everybody expected something like 'Chungking Express.' And so I said, 'Okay. We're going to make a film without handheld camerawork, without voiceovers.'"
Easily the most internationally respected of Hong Kong's handful of art film directors, Wong's reputation has grown exponentially since the international success of 1994's "Chungking Express," released in the U.S. thanks to the sponsorship of longtime Wong admirer Quentin Tarantino. Three years later Wong reached an even greater pinnacle by capturing the Cannes Best Director Prize for "Happy Together." Then, in May of this year, he struck Cannes gold once again when "In the Mood for Love" took home not one but two prizes one for Technical Achievement and a Best Actor award for co-star Tony Leung.
Though still highly stylized, "In the Mood for Love" marks a radical departure from the flash and sizzle of Wong's previous efforts, instead emphasizing subtle colors, artful compositions and unobtrusive camerawork. A simple, minimalistic love story set in 1962 Hong Kong, the film stars Leung and the ever popular Maggie Cheung as neighbors and young professionals who find themselves falling in love after they uncover an affair between their respective spouses. When asked whether he feared comparisons to the similarly themed flop, "Random Hearts," Wong chuckles. "We were actually shooting in Bangkok, and someone told me, 'There's a movie with Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott-Thomas, and the story is very much like ours!' So I said, 'Okay. Let's go take a look.' After that I said, 'It's okay. We're different.'"
