Wong Kar-wai Exclusive Interview
Two lovers embrace one another and make love. Just moments later, one abandons the other on the roadside. So begins the trajectory of "Happy Together", the latest film by director Wong Kar-wai. It is a road fraught with loss, sadness, and the misplaced expectations of not just the two characters of the film, but the film itself, which explores these elements to find things not quite as they are expected to be. The image of Argentina, where the film takes place, of homosexuality (the two lovers are male), are just two of these elements. We talked to Wong Kar-wai about his film and about misplaced expectations. Question : What have you been doing for the past couple days in New York? Wong Kar-wai : Two of my films are being shown in the New York Film Festival so I just dropped by and also because one of the films, "Happy Together," is going to be released in this country; it's showing in New York City already, and so we're spending time doing interviews. Question : The name of your film is "Happy Together." What is happiness?

Wong Kar-wai Exclusive Interview
With "Happy Together", Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai is "Hong Kong's premier cinematic iconoclast." Today, Wong, with his trademark steel-rimmed sunglasses and lanky frame, can barely shuffle down the Croisette in Cannes without being approached by Armani-clad men on cellular phones Hollywood agents, all of them wanting a piece of the man who has been hailed as one of Hong Kong's most innovative contemporary directors. Born in Shanghai 1958, he movied with his family to Hong Kong five years later. He studied Graphic Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic, where he developed a passion for photography, especially for the work of artists such as Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Richard Avedon. Upon graduating in 1980, he enrolled in a training programme for TV drama production run by Hong Kong Television Broadcasts Ltd., (HKTVB) Starting work as production assistant on a variety of drama serials, he swiftly progressed to scriptwriting, notably for the popular soap-opera/thriller Don't Look Now (1981). Here's just some of Wong Kar-wai's responses to the questions in this exclusive interview.

Wong Kar-Wai (Jump to David Sylvian) By Scott Tobias One of the most exciting directors in contemporary world cinema, Wong Kar-Wai has refined a ravishing style reminiscent of a jazz musician's improvisational riffs. After nearly a decade of writing scripts for television and genre films, Wong made his directorial debut with 1988's As Tears Go By, a violent gangster melodrama frequently compared to Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets. He followed it with a couple of extremely different projects: 1990's Days Of Being Wild, about a young man's search for his real mother in the Philippines, and 1994's Ashes Of Time, a sprawling period epic about swordsmen in ancient China. But Wong didn't find a significant audience in America until Chungking Express was released through longtime fan Quentin Tarantino's Rolling Thunder imprint in 1994. Originally intended as a trio of Hong Kong stories, Chungking Express was cut down to two charming pop romances; the third storyline formed the basis for 1995's Fallen Angels.

    Wong Kar-wai - MTV-alderens Godard

Born in 1958 in Shanghai, Wong Kar-Wai moved to Hong Kong with his parents at the age of five. He entered the Hong Kong film industry as a screenwriter. His directorial debut As Tears Go By established his strong visual style and announced him as an upcoming talent in the industry. The film was invited to the Critics' Week section of the Cannes Film Festival in 1989. In 1990, Wong assembled a cast of the most popular young actors in Hong Kong to make Days of Being Wild , set in a vividly imagined 1960. The project was planned as a diptych, but the second part was never made. The film won five Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor (Leslie Cheung). In 1992 Wong convened another all-star cast to make Ashes of Time , a martial arts drama shot in remote regions of China. Nearly two years in production, the film premiered at the 1994 Venice Film Festival. During a break in the film's post-production Wong made

Wong Kar-Wai Born: Wong Kar-Wai's second film, Days Of Being Wild, signalled a major new talent in its effortless ability to evoke a previous era and its haunting portrayal of rootless, emotionally bereft characters. Then, in 1994, Chungking Express - a blissful ecstasy rush which disinterred the spirit of early Godard. Cameraman Chris Doyle's splashy, stop-motion camerawork meshes perfectly with William Chang's exquisite set designs to create intensely textured cinemascapes for Wong. None of his films look or feel alike, but they share a genuine sympathy for his dreamers' (generally thwarted) hopes and ambitions, bestowing grace and compassion on the humblest of lives. "There is nothing but emptiness, the empty existence I exchanged for the truth." - Lu Xun
Now when did they stop making movies like this? No really, I haven't seen a movie this good since, well, Kubrick. In the Mood is a stylistic masterpiece for so many reasons, the most obvious being the sheer beauty of the film. Wong Kar-Wai's camera immortalizes everything in frame, from cigarette smoke to droplets of rain, from noodle steam to the grill of a small metal fan. And unlike the oppressive floating bag speech in American Beauty, In the Mood just shows you the damn beauty without the instructions. And what about that dress she had on during the umbrella scene? Hey now. And the narrow red hallway in that hotel. And the music? It proved once and for all that you don't need Yo-Yo Ma to have a good cello soundtrack. Now you could argue that there's just too much beauty, too much music and slow motion, not enough kung fu flying and shit. If you're going to make that argument, I guess you win.
The next of WKW's talents is the ability to move the camera. It's not as if lots of other directors don't do this. They do. The results are often bad. But with the help of Christ Doyle, long time colleague and camera savant, WKW does it in a way that recalls masters like the great X and the inimitable Y. Next would be the humor. Any great film (besides

Pascal Guyot/AFP. Best Actor, Chinese actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai, poses after receiving his trophy for his role in "In The Mood for Love." Hong Kong director Wong Wong Kar-wai's latest feature In the Mood for Love earned movie star Tony Leung Chiu-wai the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21. Rushed to completion, the film, about love regret in 1960s Hong Kong and starring Maggie Cheung, also picked up a technical achievement prize for cinematography and editing. Time Asia reporter Stephen Short spoke to Kar-waiwhose previous hits include Chungking Express and Happy Togetherduring filming of the movie. Excerpts from the interview: TIME: I'm confused. This film was originally called Beijing Summer and it seems to have been going on for about one year. What is it now? Wong Kar-wai: It's a long story. We wanted to make a movie in Beijing two years ago and actually did shoot some scenes there Then we submitted the script to the censors in China. Actually it was more like a first draft. The authorities said some points would have to be adjusted.

O filme é In Mood for Love. A não perder por nada deste mundo. Miguel Anjo
