A Nickel's Worth of Free Advice
Free People Will Set the Course of History - George W. Bush Main December 06, 2002 Michael Kinsley on Affirmative Action I clicked on this Kinsley Bakke article itching for a fight. After all, Kinsley frequently drives me batty. But much to my chagrin I found I agree with him.
He does a good job of showing how each side exagerates its position. He outlines how a constitutional "compromise" is not really possible: Trouble is, the Constitution is not supposed to split the difference. It is supposed to declare basic principles. And as a matter of principle, there is no difference between considering race as a factor and considering race as a quota. University admissions are an all-or-nothing proposition: You're either admitted or you're not. And race either made the difference or it did not. It doesn't matter to the person who loses a place due to affirmative action whether the particular mechanism was an absolute exclusion from some part of the available places or a partial penalty in competing for all the places. Every place that goes to a different person because of race is a quota of one. But he also shows how affirmative action is not really the cause of white students rejection: Figures from a representative year included in court documents indicate that the school gets about six applicants for every available place, and that even among those with Grutter's impressive GPA, your chance of getting in is about 1 in 3. Even assuming, implausibly, that every single one of the special-treatment minority students was less qualified than Grutter and would not have been admitted if they were white, that would have improved Grutter's own chances by about one-eighth. The likelihood that affirmative action done her in is very small.

MICHAEL JACKSON'S MOONWALKER Some things you just can't ignore. Traditionally I know I'm supposed to slag off horror movie sequels, list people I would rather be, write bizarre fiction, give opinions on crappy C64 games. It isn't really my place to analyse games like 'Moonwalker' for the Sega Genesis. But after playing it on an emulator, I just felt I'd be doing the world a disservice if I didn't kick this game in the teeth. So, here it is, a simulation of Michael Jackson's life, in which he must fight his way past hordes of social workers to get to innocent little girls and thrust his crotch in their faces. Ha, ha, ha, I'm just messing with you. Or am I? Yeah, yeah, I know, Michael Jackson and paedophilia jokes are passe. Well, if passe offends you you'd better click the 'back' button, 'cos I have enough paedophilia jokes here for a convention on the subject. The first thing we learn about MJ is that, by the amazing power of an animation which either has fifteen various frames missing or was drawn up by Bubbles, he can turn into a car. Obviously this is to make transporting the innocent little children he captures slightly easier. Two in the front, two in the back, and one in the boot tied up and gagged. However, when it comes to battling the bad guys, MJ prefers to revert to his human form, perhaps because he's a good sport. But if that is so, what's with the glitter?

2. Is It Worth It?
*Fine: "On-line file sharing has resulted in a loss of album sales within the college markets."
*Jay: Over 40 percent of college users of Napster " claimed that their use of Napster contributed directly to their decision to limit the amount of music they purchases."
*International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI): Sales dropped 5 percent for second straight year to $33.7 bn; 70 percent of Americans burning MP3s to personal collections and 35 percent of Americans downloading 20+ songs/month purchase less music as a direct result.
2.2. Counterclaims *Fader: Napster is beneficial and has major sampling use; both district and appeals court criticized "lack of objective data" in Fader's research and chose to disregard his testimony when reaching a decision. *Jupiter: 2001 survey found that 34 percent of experienced file-swapping users (6+ months' use) purchased more music than before v. 14 percent who purchased less; survey faulted by industry for not including volume of increase/decrease in user spending and for ignoring overall drop in music sales as a percentage of total expendible income.

Worth a (Second) Look: Coming of Age in New Jersey: College and American Culture by Michael Moffatt (New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 1989)
Kathryn M. Anderson-Levitt, University of Michigan-Dearborn
After yet another discussion with colleagues about student culture, I finally checked out Michael Moffatt's ethnography of undergraduate life at Rutgersand couldn't put it down. Coming of Age in New Jersey is an important (and fun) read for professors, and potentially useful for students as well. Moffatt did participant observation on co-ed dormitory floors in 1978 and in 1984, collecting additional information through optional paper assignments in his anthropology courses. His young dorm residents differ in important ways from my working commuter studentsthey sleep more, for one thingand Moffatt acknowledges that students change every decade. Yet he also demonstrates surprising continuity over generations of college students (white males, anyhow), convincing you that this study can't be far "out of date." (Still, if you want a closer look at female undergraduates, white and black, read Holland and Eisenhardt's Educated in Romance ; for a look at Latino students, see Gandara's

Which Environmental Risks Are Worth Addressing? by Michael Gough Director of Risk and Science Studies at the Cato Institute
a talk delivered to
Resource Development Council for Alaska, Inc. Anchorage, Alaska
November 22, 1996 T I am going to talk about two ideas that determine which environmental risks are addressed. I don’t say "addressed first" because, in practice, all environmental risks are treated as equally urgent. The two ideas are the precautionary principle and statements that chemicals in the environment are a big risk to human health. The little girl responded with something like, "You can’t prove it won’t." Cancer has been the mother of environmental health risks. I expect that most of you have heard, "The environment causes 90 percent of all cancers," or if the speaker was less of an alarmist, 80 or 70 or some other percent. There is no evidence for such statements. The statements stem from willful and intentional twisting of what scientists were saying about the causes of cancer in the 1950s and 60s. In fact, scientists did say that environment causes some major proportion of cancer, but they used "environment," to include everything with which we come into contactwhat we smoke, eat, drink, take as medicine, radiation from the sun and X-rays, etc. Dr. John Higginson, the first director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, first said something like "environment causes more than 75 percent of cancer." When he realized his words were being twisted, he told

For what it is worth, and unlike Mr. Jones I do not claim absolute
truth and wisdomI'm always searching and learningI second these
comments below. Rather than blind assertions about Marx's private
behavior or assertions about Marx's intellect by someone who obviously
couldn't intellectually make a carbuncle on Marx's ass, I would
appreciate empirically-based discussions on Marx's theory of the
tendency of the rate of profit to fall or other theories/predictions
subject to operationalization and substantive discussion (with cites
and quotations from the original works not what someone else said about Marxstart with Marx himself). When I bother to read some of Mr. Jones' posts, I am reminded of a quote by Will Rogers who was commenting on Calvin Coolidge when he said "The problem ain't what he doesn't know; the problem is what he

An Xmas CD worth buying
Feb 08 '01
Author's Product Rating
Pros
Michael's beautiful voice, some great xmas classics
Cons
A (very) few cheesy songs The Bottom Line A great Christmas CD to add to your collection. One or two so-so songs, but for most part an excellent selection for a beautiful voice! Full Review Michael Ball my absolute favorite singers, so I was thrilled to discover his fairly recent Christmas album. My favorite Christmas song is O Holy Night, and I have dreamed of the day I would hear Michael Ball sing this song. Not only did he sing it, he sang it beautifully! His style seems a cross between blues, musical showtunes, and 'classic' Christmas. He rose to fame starring in Les Miserables, and Aspects of Love, and has performed in many other musicals. He also has quite a few CDs out, although if you live in the US, they can be difficult to find. There are 12 tracks on this CD, including classics such as O Holy Night, Ave Maria, Silent Night, and From A Distance, (not really a Christmas song, but it fits). There are a few (mainly two) songs that are a bit too cheesy for me, but the rest of the songs make up for them tenfold. The CD is worth it just for O Holy Night and Ave Maria alone!
