43. Malcom X Speeches Malcom X
malcolm X (malcolm Little; later ElHajj Malik El-Shabazz)(1925-1965), a leadingfigure in the 20th-century movement for black liberation in the United States
http://www.africanaonline.com/malcom_x.htm
Malcolm X Malcolm X was a powerful and influential speaker. This excerpt, from a speech in April 1964, clearly and directly expresses his views about the status of black people in American society. Malcolm's downward descent took a U-turn in prison when he began studying the teachings of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam (NOI), the black Muslim group founded by Wallace D. Fard and led by Elijah Muhammad (Elijah Poole). Submitting to the discipline and guidance of the NOI, he became a voracious reader of the Qu'ran (Koran) and the Bible. He also immersed himself in works of literature and history at the prison library. Behind prison walls he quickly emerged as a powerful orator and brilliant rhetorician. He led the famous prison debating team that beat the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, arguing against capital punishment by pointing out that English pickpockets often did their best work at public hangings! Distinguishing Malcolm's early political and intellectual views from the teachings of Elijah Muhammad is not a simple matter. His role as minister was to preach the gospel of Islam according to Muhammad. He remained a staunch devotee of the Nation's strict moral codes and gender conventions. Although his own narrative suggests that he never entirely discarded his hustler's distrust of women, he married Betty Sanders (later Betty Shabazz) in 1958 and lived by NOI rules: men must lead, women must follow; the man's domain is the world, the woman's is the home.

    THE BLACK BOOK:
THE TRUE POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY OF MALCOLM X
    (El Hajj Malik El Shabazz)
    ed. by Y.N. Kly
ISBN: 0-932863-03-5, 104 pp., 1986, $9.95 Sixth printing Now in its sixth printing, this highly popular book on the great African-American Muslim illustrates the influence of his Islamic faith and his international experience upon his constantly expanding political vision. The first to present a comprehensive analysis that integrates the developing vision of the man, Malcolm X, with the man he became, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, it provides an in-depth analysis of Malcolm's directives on why the African-American struggle for national liberation and self-determination is necessary, how it should be carried on, and why it can succeed.
"Numerous works have been written on the life and ideals of Malcolm X by a marxist, liberal, communist, capitalist or Black Power follower which, obviously, paid scant regard to the total Islamic commitment of Malcolm X. Therefore, this contribution by a Muslim to clarify and analyze in depth the ideals of Malcolm X on the basis of the Qur'an and Sunnah is long overdue... Kly makes an excellent comparative study of Malcolm's ideological moorings in Islam... Highly recommended to any serious radical scholar..." Jamalludien Ahmed Hamdulah

    58. Webcorp -- Voices Of The Civil Rights Era.
Short commentaries and recordings from famous speeches by Martin King, John F. Kennedy, and malcolm X.
    http://webcorp.com/civilrights/voices.htm
On the surface, the 1960's opened with a sense of hope and expectation best exemplified in JFK's Inaugural Address . While this was soon to be shattered for everyone by the Kennedy killing and the continuing war, most of America's blacks were alienated even before these events.
Those who were called to action divided themselves into several major camps, each with a different approach and methods. Perhaps the two most prominent were followers of Martin Luther King , who advocated a nonviolent approach patterned on Gandhi's successful Indian revolution, and those of Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X , who initally felt that one could only meet violent repression with violence in response.
Of course, all of the figures here met violent ends perhaps that makes it even more interesting to see three distinct visions of the future reflected in the selected audio clips.

Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X's widow, dies at 61
Death came 3 weeks after she suffered severe burns
    June 23, 1997
Web posted at: 6:12 p.m. EDT (2212 GMT) NEW YORK (CNN) Betty Shabazz, the widow of civil rights leader Malcolm X, died Monday, three weeks after being severely burned in a fire allegedly set by her 12-year-old grandson. Shabazz, 61, had suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of her body in the June 1 incident at her home in Yonkers, just north of New York City. She had remained in extremely critical condition, undergoing several operations as doctors struggled to replace damaged skin and save her life. Brian Jenkins' report as seen on CNN VXtreme Streaming Video New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced the death, saying he had been informed by the family. Giuliani said he wanted to "express my sympathy, my condolences to her family that's with her and all the people who work with her, know her and love her so much." "Millions of people look to her for some kind of understanding of the history of the struggle," said black activist and poet Amiri Baraka. "She's the wife of one of the greatest African-American leaders of history." Within hours of the fire, Shabazz's grandson was arrested and accused of setting the blaze, reportedly because he was unhappy he had been sent to live with his grandmother. He is being held in juvenile custody.
