CHUCK YEAGER Pilot A combat pilot in World War II, Yeager was shot down over France in 1943, but not captured. After the war he was put in charge of pilot training for experimental aircraft, and on October 14, 1947 became the first person to break the sound barrier, flying a rocket powered Bell X-1 jet. He helped train the first U.S. astronauts and, as if there were no end to his studliness, flew combat missions over Vietnam in the 1960s. In the 1980s Yeager became a celebrity, thanks in large part to Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff , an account of the early U.S. space program.
Extra credit : Yeager's Bell X-1 was called the Glamorous Glennis in tribute to Yeager's wife... Yeager was played by actor Sam Shepard in the 1984 film The Right Stuff ; Yeager himself had a small role in the film as a bartender.

Chuck Yeager
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Brigadier General Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager (born February 13 Myra West Virginia ) is an American World War II ace and test pilot. Charles Yeager achieved the rank of Brigadier General in the Air Force. He is most famous for being the first person to travel faster than Mach 1, the speed of sound, in level flight. On October 14 , Yeager broke the sound barrier flying the Bell X-1 at an altitude of 45,000 feet. The X-1 was an experimental rocket plane, nicknamed the Glamorous Glennis after Yeager's wife. This aircraft is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution 's National Air And Space Museum Yeager's career started when he signed up to join the military in 1939. On his first flight, he actually got sick but soon learned to love flying. He served in the military all the way through the

CHUCK YEAGER: THE RIGHT STUFF
With the long-awaited conversion of Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer just about to be released from Electronic Arts, CRASH investigates General Yeager's career and talks to the programmer. At the end of WWII, and the start of the Cold War, jet propulsion was replacing propellors and the race was on to produce the best military jets in the world. The great aviation companies of the US churned out ever weirder aircraft by the month - jets like the tiny Goblin (intended to be carried by bombers until needed for defence) and jets with skis (to land on water). There were no sophisticated computers to predict how the aircraft would fly, and little time for long, slow evaluations. The air base where all these tests happened was Edwards, named after a dead test pilot, and its roads soon became named after yet more test pilots who'd 'bought the farm'. Simply learning to fly those early, primitive jets was difficult - in 1952, 62 USAF pilots died during just 36 weeks of training - testing them was even more hazardous. Yet flying at Edwards was not a duty dreaded by its pilots. Quite the reverse, in fact, as writer Tom Wolfe described it in

Chuck Yeager
On October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager and the X-1 were carried aloft for the most famous flight since the Wright Brothers had taken off at Kitty Hawk. At 20,000 feet, the little orange rocket plane was released and Yeager ignited two of its four rockets. Smoothly, he accelerated to 0.88 Mach and climbed to 42,000. Once there, he began the dramatic assault on the Wall, igniting one after another of the little plane's rocket thrusters. At 0.965 Mach, the airspeed indicator went haywire. In a supreme gesture of confidence, the very engineers who had designed the plane to break the sound barrier had installed an airspeed indicator that topped out at 1.0 Mach. Pressing ahead, the buffeting of transonic flight disappeared and Yeager pegged the needle to its limit. The faster he flew, the smoother it became. The world's first manmade sonic boom marked his passage. Hearing the distant rumble, the engineers were ready to pack it in and call the next of kin when the radio crackled to life. It was Yeager. "I'm still wearing my ears and nothing else fell off, neither." he said. Once past the Wall, it was an easy ride. Ground data would show later that the plane had reached 1.07 Mach. In the end, the Wall was a myth. Supersonic flight was attained by an engineer's slide rule and a pilot with the courage to push the envelope into the unknown.

Biography Charles Elwood Yeager grew up in the West Virginia village of Hamlin. After graduating high school in 1941, Yeager enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. Yeager was trained as a mechanic, but applied for the "Flying Sergeants" program. Yeager entered training in 1942 and was sent to England in November of 1943 as part of the first unit to receive the P-51 Mustang. One day, Yeager was leading three squadrons of P-51s, escorting a bombing group into Germany. Yeager's squadron came upon 22 ME-109s, of which Yeager personally shot down five. On March 5, 1944, Yeager was shot down during a dogfight with three German fighters. Yeager, wounded, hid in the woods for a day. He contacted a French farmer, who notified the resistance forces. Yeager made his way through France and into Spain, eventually returning to his squadron. Army rules at the time required all downed flyers to be returned to the United States. This was to keep them from compromising infromation about the French resistance. Yeager petitioned all the way up to General Eisenhower in an attempt to stay flying. By this time, the invasion of France was underway and Eisenhower allowed Yeager to rejoin his squadron. At the end of the war, Yeager had flown 64 combat missions, shooting down 13 enemy aircraft. Upon returning to the United States after the war, Yeager, and all airmen who had been shot down, were allowed their choice of base. Yeager choose Wright Field, close to his home town. At Wright Field, the fighter test section was in need of a maintenance officer, and Yeager was qualified. Yeager's performance caught the eye of Colonel Boyd, chief of the test flight division, who encouraged Yeager to attend test pilot school.

Biographical Information
Yeager returned to the United States in February 1945, assigned to Perrin Field, Texas as a basic flying instructor. A few months later, in July, he was assigned as a maintenance officer at the Flight Test Division of Wright Field, Ohio. At Wright, Yeager quickly gained the attention of Col. Albert Boyd, chief of the division, for his remarkable flying skills. He graduated from the Flight Performance School (now the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School) and Wright Field in 1946 and in 1947 received a regular commission as an Air Force Captain. In late summer 1947 he was sent to Muroc Army Air Field (now Edwards Air Force Base) to test the rocket-powered Bell X-1. Chuck Yeager continued his career as an Air Force test pilot into the 1950s, including a 1953 test of an Air Force X-1A rocket plane that again made him the "World's Fastest Man." In 1954, he left Edwards Air Force Base to work at the 12th Air Force Headquarters in West Germany, making test flights with nuclear weapons. He returned to the United States in 1957, serving as commander of the 1st Fighter Squadron at George Air Force Base, California. In 1962 he returned to Edwards Air Force Base, with his new rank of Colonel, to become commandant of the U.S. Air Force Aerospace Research Pilot School, responsible for the training of U.S. military astronaut candidates.

Charles E. (Chuck) Yeager
Charles E. (Chuck) Yeager (1923- ) enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1941 at the age of eighteen. He worked as an aircraft mechanic and pilot before going over the Atlantic to fight in World War II. Upon returning from war, he entered test pilot school and so impressed his superiors that he was selected to fly the X-1 from over 125 senior pilots. On October 14, 1947, Yeager broke the sound barrier over the town of Victorville, California. Six years later, on another test flight, Yeager pushed his plane, the X-1A, to new heights, but almost lost his life as his plane came within feet of crashing. During the fifties, he flew several experimental aircraft for the Air Force and investigated various accidents. In 1960 he was appointed director of the Space School at Edwards Air Force Base. He went to Vietnam as a wing commander in 1966 and flew over 120 combat missions. In 1986, Yeager was appointed to the Presidential Commission investigating the Challenger accident.
