AcePilots Main Page The Forum Eighth Air Force Aces Page Yeager Page 2 ... X-15 Chuck Yeager's accomplishments as an ace in WWII have been overshadowed by his achievements as a test pilot, but his fighter pilot experiences were remarkable on their own. An eighteen-year old West Virgina country boy, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1941 and shot down eleven (and a half!) German planes, including two Me-262 jets. He was also shot down over France, evaded, joined the Maquis, and made his way back to England via Spain. Somehow he persuaded the brass to let him continue flying fighter missions in Europe, contrary to policy. All of this by the age of twenty-two. Born in 1923, son of Albert Hal Yeager (a staunch Republican, so firm in his party loyalties that he once refused to shake President Harry Truman's hand), Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager grew up in Myra, on the Mud River in West Virgina. His dirt-poor youth was filled with hillbilly themes that sound romantic today, but probably weren't much fun at the time: making moonshine, eating cornmeal mush three times a day, shooting squirels for dinner, chasing rats out of the kitchen, going barefoot all summer, butchering hogs, and stealing watermelons. At an early age Chuck could do well at anything requiring manual dexterity or math: ping-pong, shooting, auto mechanics. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps

Muroc Field
After WW2, Chuck Yeager was assigned to be a test pilot at Muroc Field in California. Muroc was high up in the California desert, a barren place except for sagebrush and Joshua Trees. The main attraction of Muroc was Rogers Dry Lake, a flat expanse that was covered with a couple inches of water in the winter, and dried out hard and flat in the spring. A natural landing field, with miles of good surface in every direction. In 1946, the whole place was off-limits, a top secret Army base, developing jet and rocket planes. And there was almost nothing there - two simple hangars, some fuel pumps, one concrete runway, and a few shacks. In many ways, Muroc was fighter pilot Heaven in the late '40s: the run-down, Quonset-hut facilities didn't attract many visits from the Army Air Force top brass, and there wasn't much to do there but fly, and drink and drive fast cars. Pancho Barnes' "Fly Inn" was the pilots' favorite watering hole.
Breaking the Sound Barrier
One of the great unknowns of the time was the so-called "sound barrier." Planes like the British Meteor jets that approached the speed of sound (760MPH at sea level, 660 MPH at 40,000 feet) had encountered severe buffeting of the controls. At that time, no one knew for sure whether an airplane could exceed "Mach 1," the speed of sound. A British pilot, Geoffrey de Havilland, had died trying. The U.S. Army was determined to find out first.

Yeager, Chuck (Charles Elwood Yeager), 1923-, American aviator. A fighter pilot during World War II, he was a test pilot during the early postwar years. Among other records, he was the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound (1947) and set a world speed record of 1,650 mph (1953). His obvious bravery, technical skill, and unaffected manner have made him the quintessential American hero. He wrote his autobiography, Yeager (with Leo Janos, 1985).

Brig. Gen. Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager Brig. Gen. Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager was born in Myra, W.Va., on Feb. 13, 1923. He enlisted as a private in the Army Air Corps in September 1941 and, after serving briefly as an aircraft mechanic, entered enlisted pilot training in September 1942. He graduated as an enlisted flight officer from Luke Field, Ariz., in March 1943 and was assigned to the 363rd Fighter Squadron (357th Fighter Group), at Tonopah, Nev., where he flew P-39s. In November 1943, his unit was sent to England where he entered combat (photo) flying a P-51 Mustang His remarkably superb flying skills quickly caught the attention of Col. Albert Boyd, chief of the division, and Col. Fred Ascani, his deputy. As Ascani recalled, Yeager flew an airplane "as though he was an integral part of it; his 'feel' for a new airplane was instinctive, intuitive and as natural as if he had already flown it for a hundred or more hours." In 1946, he graduated from the Flight Performance School (initial designation of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School) at Wright Field and, in 1947, Boyd selected him as project pilot for one of the most important series of flights in history. In late summer 1947, he was sent to Muroc Army Air Field (now Edwards Air Force Base) to fly the rocket-powered Bell X-1

    38. Review Of 'Yeager' - Chuck Yeager/Leo Janos
Review of chuck yeager's (with Leo Janos) yeager . ISBN 0553-25674-2. chuckyeager is the best fighter pilot this nation has ever produced.

Review of Chuck Yeager's (with Leo Janos) "Yeager"
    ISBN 0-553-25674-2
Chuck Yeager is a common man who was born with extraordinary eyesight, a mechanical bent and at the perfect moment in history to become a living legend. This is what General Yeager asserts in his autobiography. Even a casual reading of it, however, demonstrates that there is much more to him than simply that. General Yeager's life has been filled with action and excitement. One comes away from 'Yeager', written with the help of Leo Janos, with the sense that the lives of several people have been presented. You might expect controversy and excitement from the autobiography of a world renowned fighter pilot, and 'Yeager' delivers both. His tone is cocky and he spares few people with whom he locked horns over the years. In an ironic anecdote he lets us know that he doesn't think much of Neil Armstrong's flying judgement (and you'll chuckle as he tells why.) Ironic because Neil Armstrong later became the first man to walk on the moon. An interesting feature of this excellent autobiography is Other Voices . Each chapter is punctuated with short anecdotes from those who were directly involved with the General. We get to hear from his wife Glynnis throughout; Colonel Boyd, who selected the General to break the sound barrier, and several other personal 'witnesses' along the way.

    Chuck Yeager
For many people, Chuck Yeager is a true hero in the strictest definition of the word. Throughout his career, Yeager displayed distinguished courage and performed several extraordinarily brave deeds, although he only considered such acts as following his duty. Many people recognize Yeager as the first person to break the sound barrier , but that feat is only one of his many important achievements. Without a doubt, Yeager is the world's most famous test pilot not only because of the records he set, but also because of his determination, his ability to remain calm in difficult situations, and his ability to quickly analyze problems and find a solution. He is one of the "toughest" pilots, both mentally and physically, in aviation history, and few have ever matched his piloting skills. Charles "Chuck" E. Yeager was born on February 13, 1923, in Myra, West Virginia. The son of a gas driller, Chuck grew up working with a wide variety of mechanical devices. He could readily take apart an engine and put it back together without difficulty. A few months after his high school graduation, Yeager joined the U.S. Army Air Forces.
