This was how reviewer Paul Dehn headlined his London Sunday Chronicle review of Carol Reed's 1947 ODD MAN OUT: "Mason Back In the Best Film of All Time." A stunning combination of the romantic realism which Reed and other directors had made a trademark of the wartime British cinema, and the postwar's pervasive feeling of desolation, ODD MAN OUT is an extended cry of anguish a cry whose last echoes, strangely, are those of hope and love. ODD MAN OUT begins as a caper film. In a hushed back bedroom, "Johnny McQueen" (James Mason) tells his confederates, "Pat" (Cyril Cusack), "Nolan" (Dan O'Herlihy), and "Murphy" (Roy Irving) about the robbery they are about to execute in the name of the IRA. Even now, in the last moments during which he will partake of anything like society's congeniality , the last time he will not have reason to fear at least one face within his view, even now, Johnny is of some other world whose surface we cannot pierce. Ascetic yet tough, reserved yet strangely expressive, he is a less a gang leader than a minor messiah, his influence filling the tiny room to its very sills with a sense of his undeniability and indestructibility. But only for a moment. For the instant Johnny leaves the tiny bedroom that has been his hideout since breaking jail six months before, his life is forfeit. If he has been seen in an almost religious light by his cronies and by "Kathleen Sullivan" (Kathleen Ryan), the IRA girl who so stoicly adores him, now, he will get his chance to be saint of violence, a martyr to the Organization. A spirit almost as otherworldly as himself, "The Inspector" (Dennis O'Dea), thin-lipped and deadly, will pursue Johnny through snow-swept alleys and down the rat holes of the poor and the petty criminals. Johnny will know danger and betrayal, and finally, deliverance, in Belfast.

    Kathleen Neal Cleaver
Educator, writer, lawyer, activist Although Kathleen Neal Cleaver first came to the attention of the public because of her relationship with Eldridge Cleaver and the Black Panther Party, she has many accomplishments outside of her relationship with Cleaver for which she is well known. She is widely viewed as a gifted lawyer and educator who speaks out ardently against racism. She is greatly in demand as a lecturer and has published numerous articles in newspapers and magazines. Born on May 13, 1945, in Dallas, Texas, Cleaver was the first child of Ernest Neal and Juette Johnson Neal. Her father was at that time a sociology professor at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Her mother held a master's degree in mathematics. Shortly after Cleaver's birth, Ernest Neal accepted a position as director of the Rural Life Council of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. After six years teaching sociology and designing community development projects, Ernest Neal joined the Foreign Service and moved the family abroad. The Neals would spend the next years in such locations as India, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the Philippines. While her parents remained in West Africa, Cleaver returned to the United States and enrolled in the George School, a Quaker boarding school near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There she completed high school in 1963, graduating with honors. Cleaver began her college education at Oberlin College in Ohio and later transferred to prestigious Barnard College in New York. In 1966, she left college to work in the New York office of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

Don Juan: There are only four questions of value in life, Don Octavio. What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same: only love.- Don Juan DeMarco Never forget! One silent night, probably, you will enter into this world of the sublime wich will convey you into the merry part of life. Art, through all its expresions, whether we are talking about painting, sculpture, writing, poetry, literature, architecture, photography, cinema, theatre, dance, music, literature, romance, design... is the only one that can transform the reality. It is an uplifting situation that those who adorn the soul are continuously challenging our immagination and our souls with their endless masterpieces. "... here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)..."- e. e. cummings Every time I get a script it's a matter of trying to know what I could do with it. I see colors, imagery. It has to have a smell. It's like falling in love. You can't give a reason why.- Lena Olin

    POSTCARD FROM THE ROAD
    Escape to New York
    By Kathleen Lingo
Date : 11-7-97 NEW YORK- I have always been an independent person, ready and willing to take on responsibility and strike out on my own. As most teenagers can attest, this attitude does not work well at home. My mother gives me a lot of freedom and privileges for a 17-year-old, but I have always craved more‹the space in which to forge my own identity. I thought about running away, but it seemed too dramatic a move‹the consequences outweighed the advantages. I considered getting my GED, or graduating early and moving out, but settled instead on a summer mission. Last spring, I decided to go to Columbia University's Summer Program for High School Students. I enrolled in a class in chemistry, my favorite subject, and prepared myself for the escape. I did not know anyone in New York, except for an aunt I rarely saw. But I'd always had an image of New York as a place of unlimited possibility. The city I touched down in felt like a foreign land. My haven was my dorm room at Columbia. I was so happy to be on my own. There were some rules in the program, but I stealthily avoided all of them! Best of all, there was not a familiar face for 3,000 miles. The kids I met were very different from those on the West Coast. First of all, they had no blatant style. The uniform seemed to be a mix of watered-down raver and hip hop looks. I am used to San Francisco, where every kid is a specimen of some mildly creative style. The kids at Columbia were of every race and personality type, but they did not feel the need to differentiate themselves through fashion statements. Instead, they did it through their voices, talking and yelling their identity at you every chance they got.
