BSc (Hons.) Medicinal Chemistry will appeal to students with an interest in chemistry in relation to the medical and health sciences, such as pharmaceutical chemistry, clinical chemistry, and medical laboratory science. Students complete a number of core chemistry and biomedical modules and then specialise in modules relating to medicinal aspects of chemistry. Modules available include Clinical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Modern Synthetic Methods, Molecular Cell Biology, Pharmacology . Some of the specialist medicinal modules are delivered at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. Aims of the course
The course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of medicinal and chemical sciences by detailed studies of modules selected from the fields of biology, biomedical sciences and chemistry. The emphasis is firstly on synthesis, structure and analysis of organic molecules and biomolecules and secondly on thweir participation in the metabolism of and interaction with living organisms. Methods of teaching and learning

Metallopharmaceuticals
Until relatively recently, the chemistry and biochemistry of inorganic molecules has been largely ignored by the pharmaceutical industry. Apart from a small number of mainstays, such as ferrous sulphate and desferrioxamine, few metallopharmaceuticals have found application. Recently the climate has changed with the association of critical levels of iron, copper and aluminium with a number of disease states, and characterisation of metalloenzymes. The Department of Pharmacy has considerable expertise in this emerging field. Over the last decade the metallopharmaceuticals group at King's College has brought three different compounds to clinical trials: a 3-hydroxypyridin-4-one for the selective removal of iron; an iron pyrone complex for the treatment of anemia, and a selective phosphate-binding resin for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia. Two of the compounds are now licenced to pharmaceutical companies. The group collaborates closely with several London hospitals and is currently developing orally active compounds for the treatment of thalassaemia, sickle cell anemia and malaria. Other projects associated with the group include the characterisation of non-transferrin-bound iron in various disease states, the use of novel iron-selective fluorophores to image intracellular iron pools and the design of novel antioxidants.

Medicinal Chemistry

Combinatorial libraries are synthesised for screening against novel targets as part of the Centre's new initiative in combinatorial chemistry/high throughput screening. The Mass Spectrometry Group provides analytical support for combinatorial chemistry and for pharmacokinetic and drug metabolism studies on novel compounds in preclinical and early clinical development. The Team provides medicinal chemistry input into the discovery and development of inhibitors of novel molecular targets. Combinatorial Chemistry During the 18 months since the robotic facility for combinatorial synthesis was installed, we have synthesised two medium sized libraries (~1000 compounds in each). From one of these we have identified lead inhibitors of target enzymes histone acetyl transferase and ERK2. We have also developed resin-based methodologies for the synthesis of several further compound libraries.

[Back to top] Efflux Pumps: Their Role in Antibacterial Drug Discovery O. Lomovskaya and W. J. Watkins The emergence of active efflux as a major causative factor in antibiotic resistance has been one of the most significant trends in antiinfective chemotherapy over the last decade. The phenomenon affects virtually all classes of antibiotics and frequently results in multi-drug resistant phenotypes. This review analyzes efflux pumps of clinical significance and examines their impact on different antibiotic classes relative to other mechanisms of resistance. Progress in strategies to combat efflux-mediated resistance by modification of existing antibiotics or identification of efflux pump inhibitors is also reviewed. [Back to top] The Role of CD8+ T Cell Soluble Factors in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection K.F.T. Copeland Cell-mediated immune responses are important for the control of HIV replication in vivo. Cytotoxic CD8+ T cells (CTL) recognize and kill HIV-infected cells which display MHC class-I proteins. In addition to the recognition and killing of infected cells, CD8+T cells can interfere with stages of the HIV life-cycle. Chemokines produced by CD8+ T cells bind to their seven-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptors resulting in a block in the entry of HIV into macrophages and T cells. In addition, activated CD8+ T cells produce factors which strongly modulate HIV at the level of transcription. This review will focus primarily on the current knowledge of the multifactorial functions of CD8+ T cells in HIV infection. An understanding of the mechanisms involved in the CD8-mediated control of transcription may identify other factors with potential value in the treatment of HIV infection.

The confidence of the global major in gvk bio's capabilities is evident in a statement by Ms. Prabhavati Fernandes, the CEO at Ricerca, "Having access to gvk bio's large pool of skilled chemists, biology capabilities, and state-of-the-art facilities means we can offer better solutions for our discovery clients and more rapidly advance out own discovery and development efforts at the same time," said Ms. Fernandes.
