A new potentially life-saving drug developed by a Bar-Ilan professor has received a green light for further development from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Tests show that Prof. Abraham Nudelman's prodrug AN-9 demonstrates significant effectiveness in the war on cancer.
It's not surprising that Prof. Abraham Nudelman's pharmaceutical lab has drawn the attention of major chemical and drug companies throughout the world. Through joint-research with Beilinson Medical Center's Dr. Ada Raphaeli, the Bar-Ilan University chemist has developed a drug-delivery system (or prodrug) whereby the cancer-fighting substance Butyric Acid can be delivered to the site of disease before breaking down.
Nudelman's prodrug (called AN-9) has been tested using the strict procedures of the American National Cancer Institute, and was found to display promising anti-cancer properties in lung, pancreatic, colon cancers and melanoma.

Funding from industrial sponsorship and contracts have challenged our researchers to work in a diverse range of areas including polymers, materials science, chemistry, soil and rock sciences and foods, along with those more conventionally associated with medicinal chemistry such as articular joints, the brain and heart. Medical and non-medical themes are now connected by a growing commitment to aspects of biotechnology, including molecular and cell labelling. top next

A major focus of research in my laboratory is to define the impact of antibiotics on the gut flora and to identify ways of minimizing the adverse effects of the perturbations (diarrhea and colitis). We have a special interest in Clostridium difficile, a bacterium that takes advantage of antibiotic perturbations to the intestinal flora to cause pathology ranging from antibiotic-associated diarrhea to life threatening pseudomembranous colitis. Our approach is to replace the normal bacteria eliminated by antibiotics with innocuous microorganisms that have inhibitory activities against pathogens. We have successfully used the yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii, in human clinical trials to prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea and to treat pseudomembranous colitis. Present efforts are directed at defining the protective mechanisms of this yeast. Another research area for my laboratory is to identify and determine the significance of drug interactions with popular botanical (herbal) products. These studies involve in vitro incubations of cytochrome P450 enzymes with substrates and varying concentrations of the botanical extract to define the inhibition constants. For those botanicals showing strong in vitro inhibition, follow-up studies in human volunteers are undertaken. These studies are revealing that several popular botanical products such as ginkgo should be used very cautiously when taken together with some prescription drugs.

Education New Mexico, Highlands University, Las Vegas, NM, M.S., Chemistry Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, Ph.D., Chemistry Research: Design and Synthesis of Heterocycles and Nucleosides Our research group is involved in the design, synthesis and development of structurally and mechanistically diverse biological and chemotherapeutic agents. The majority of this research effort is expended in one of the most successful areas for the development of potentially active chemotherapeutic agents, antimetabolites. The antimetabolite approach has been used with considerable success in the search for effective antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, and anti-cancer agents. The design, synthesis and evaluation of the tricyclic nucleoside 5'-phosphate (TCN-P) is an excellent example of the success which can be achieved by using this approach since TCN-P has been recently placed on Phase II clinical trials as an anti-cancer agent. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a major cause of sickness and death among AIDS victims, infants and organ transplant patients. Our research group has designed and synthesized a number of compounds in diverse heterocyclic systems (e.g., pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine, benzimidazole, and purine) as part of a national cooperative drug discovery group supported by NIAID. Several compounds are currently undergoing evaluation for HCMV activity in animal and pre-clinical studies, in addition to a benzimidazole derivative which is currently in Phase II clinical trials against HCMV infections.

BSc and MSci Medicinal Chemistry
All degrees are structured in modules or units, each student taking half and full unit courses totaling to four units each year. The system allows considerable flexibility in tailoring degrees to individual requirements and in transfer between related degree programmes. Most units are based on a set of lectures, assigned course work and tutorials in small groups with an academic staff member, and many courses have associated laboratory work. Typically students spend two afternoons each week in the chemistry laboratories. Each unit or half-unit is individually assessed. The following section describes the structure of the BSc and MSci degree in MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY
Medicinal Chemistry (BSc F150; MSci F153) ( Entry requirements and Degree Structure
This century has seen the beginnings of the realization of one of our most fundamental ambitions: the conquest of disease by the effective use of drugs. Medicinal chemistry is concerned with the discovery, design and synthesis of new drugs for clinical use. These degree programmes include courses in biology, physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology, along with the fundamentals of chemistry necessary to design and synthesize drugs. These provide an understanding of the link between chemical structure and clinical effectiveness, which underlies the courses on drug design.
