JOHN QUINCY ADAMS 6th President of the United States John Quincy Adams was the son of President John Adams , served as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and was Secretary of State under President Monroe . In the presidential election of 1824, no one candidate received a majority of electoral votes and the election was decided in Adams' favor by Congress. The election of 1828 was the first in which the candidates were chosen by state legislatures instead of congressional caucuses, making the popular vote more of a factor. Adams lost by a wide margin to the Democrat from the south, Andrew Jackson . Although he served only one term as president, in 1830 Adams was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served for the remaining 17 years of his life.
Extra credit : Historian David McCullough's biography, John Adams , was an instant bestseller after its release in May of 2001... Adams and Jefferson , revolutionary cohorts and longtime political rivals, died in separate states on the same day: the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence... Adams was the first president to attend Harvard University and the first to have a son become president... Adams spoke before the U.S. Supreme Court in defense of the slaves who escaped aboard the ship Amistad ; he was played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1997 movie of that title directed by Steven Spielberg

Biography

Of all the early presidents of the United States, John Adams has been the least understood and appreciated. His reputation, both during his lifetime and after, has suffered from this lack of understanding. Yet he was a remarkable man who contributed greatly to the creation of the United States during the American Revolution and in its formative years. Early Years Adams was born on October 30, 1735, in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts. His great-grandfather Henry Adams had emigrated from England. But both his grandfather Joseph Adams and his father, John Adams, had been born in Braintree. His mother, Susanna Boylston Adams, came from the nearby city of Boston. Adams grew up on his father's farm, doing the usual country chores, including feeding the horses, milking the cows, and chopping wood. In 1751, at the age of 16, he entered Harvard, then a small college, and graduated four years later. He then taught school during the day and studied law at night. In 1758 he became a lawyer. Perhaps his most famous case, which showed Adams' characteristic courage, was his successful defense of the British soldiers who were arrested after the Boston Massacre in 1770. In 1764, Adams married Abigail Smith. She was an intelligent and sprightly woman whose letters are still a source of interesting information. The marriage was happy and successful. It lasted 54 years, until Abigail Adams' death in 1818. Their eldest son, John Quincy

John Quincy Adams was born on July 11, 1767, at Braintree (now Quincy), Mass., the son of John Adams, the second president. He spent his early years in Europe with his father, graduated from Harvard, and entered law practice. His anti-Paine newspaper articles won him political attention. In 1794, he became minister to the Netherlands, the first of several diplomatic posts that occupied him until his return to Boston in 1801. In 1797, he married Louisa Catherine Johnson. In 1803, Adams was elected to the Senate, nominally as a Federalist, but his repeated displays of independence on such issues as the Louisiana Purchase and the embargo caused his party to demand his resignation and ostracize him socially. In 1809, Madison rewarded him for his support of Jefferson by appointing him minister to St. Petersburg. He helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, and in 1815 became minister to London. In 1817 Monroe appointed him secretary of state where he served with great distinction, gaining Florida from Spain without hostilities and playing an equal part with Monroe in formulating the Monroe Doctrine.

Ven. John Adams
Priest, martyred at Tyburn, 8 October, 1586. He had been a Protestant minister, but being converted, went to Reims in 1579, where he was ordained a priest. He returned to England in March, 1581. Father William Warford, who knew him personally, described him as a man of "about forty years of age, of average height, with a dark beard, a sprightly look and black eyes. He was a very good controversialist, straightforward, very pious, and pre-eminently a man of hard work. He laboured very strenuously at Winchester and in Hampshire, where he helped many, especially of the poorer classes." Imprisoned in 1584, he was banished with seventy-two other priests in 1585; but having returned was again arrested, and executed, with two others, Ven. John Lowe and Ven. Robert Dibdale. PATRICK RYAN

70. The Education Of John Quincy Adams
Brief overview of the education of America's sixth president. Includes a letter written by a 10year-old adams to his father.
http://forerunner.com/mandate/X0069_The_Education_of_Joh.html
The Education of John Quincy Adams
America's sixth president This issue of The Mandate examines the importance of the family in shaping the destiny of a nation. The article on pages 10-11 shows that God the Creator has given parents the great responsibility of overseeing the education and character development of their children. Christian character, which can never be adequately taught in a public school setting, is essential to sustain a free nation. Modern Americans have ceased, for the most part, to fulfill this obligation. They have turned away from the God who made America great and have produced a generation that is lazy, incapable of shouldering responsibility, dishonest, and forever blame-shifting. Many Chinese students observe these modern Americans and the enormous prosperity they have inherited and conclude that freedom and prosperity must have very little to do with personal character. But that is not true. We must look deeper to find the truth. The personal history of most early Americans reveals quite a distinct contrast in character to their modern counterparts. A close examination of historic accounts leads to one conclusion: America rose to greatness because of character - and she shall fall, if current trends prevail, for lack of it. John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, is an excellent example of this character instilled in early Americans. Born in 1767, John Quincy came from a New England farm family that played a significant role in shaping the course of the United States.

Adams, John Quincy Adams, John Quincy, Adams and Abigail Adams and father of Charles Francis Adams Dana In 1803 he became a U.S. Senator as a Federalist, but his independence led him to approve Jeffersonian policies in the Louisiana Purchase and in the Embargo Act of 1807 ; the Federalists were outraged, and he resigned (1808). Sent as minister to Russia in 1809, he was well received, but the Napoleonic wars eclipsed Russian-American relations. He then helped to draw up the Treaty of Ghent Monroe Doctrine In 1824 Adams was a candidate for the U.S. presidency. Neither he, nor Andrew Jackson , nor Henry Clay received a majority, and the election was decided in the House of Representatives. There Clay supported Adams, making him president. Adams appointed Clay secretary of state, over the Jacksonians' cry that the appointment fulfilled a corrupt bargain. With little popular support and without a party, Adams had an unhappy, ineffective administration, despite his attempts to institute a broad program of internal improvements. Cold and introspective, Adams was not generally popular, but he was respected for his high-mindedness and knowledge. His interest in science led him to promote the

ADAMS, JOHN
ADAMS—AD AMSON These epistles show him to have been on the most friendly terms with some of the foremost men in state and church, though his ardent protestantism offended Laud and hindered his preferment. His " occasionally" printed sermons, when collected in 1629, placed him beyond all comparison in the van of the preachers of England, and had something to do with shaping John Bunyan. He equals Jeremy Taylor in brilliance of fancies, and Thomas Fuller in wit. Robert Southey calls him " the prose Shakespeare of Puritan theologians." His numerous works display great learning, classical and patristic, and are unique in their abundance of stories, anecdotes, aphorisms and puns. His works were edited in J. P. Nichol's Puritan Divines, by J. Angus and T. Smith (3 vols. 8vo, 1862). See England's Earliest Intercourse with Japan, by C. VV. Hillary (1905); Letters written by the English Residents in Japan, ed. by N. Murakami (1900, containing Adams's Letters reprinted from Memorials of the Empire of Japan, ed. by T. The MS. of his logs written during his voyages to Siam and China is in the Bodleian Library at Oxford.
