John Adams: Unsung Hero of the American Revolution
(updated May 29, 2002) In a letter dated July 3, 1776, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was participating in the Second Continental Congress, John Adams, the future second President of the United States, wrote to his wife Abigail Smith Adams at their home in Braintree, Massachusetts: "Yesterday the greatest Question was decided, which ever was debated in America, and a greater perhaps, never was or will be decided among Men. A Resolution was passed without one dissenting Colony 'that these united Colonies, are, and of right ought to be free and independent States, and as such, they have, and of Right ought to have full Power to make War, conclude Peace, establish Commerce, and to do all the other Acts and Things, which other States may rightfully do.' You will see in a few days a Declaration setting forth the Causes which have impell'd Us to this mighty Revolution, and the Reasons which will justify it in the Sight of God and Man. A Plan of Confederation will be taken up in a few days." In another letter dated July 3, 1776 from John Adams at the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Abigail Smith Adams in Braintree, Massachusetts, John Adams wrote:

John Adams
Independence National Historical Park John Adams was born at Quincy, then part of the ancient town of Braintree, on the 19th day of October, old style, 1735. He was a descendant of the Puritans, his ancestors having early emigrated from England, and settled in Massachusetts. Discovering early a strong love of reading and of knowledge, proper care was taken by his father to provide for his education. His youthful studies were prosecuted in Braintree, under Mr. Marsh, a gentleman whose fortune it was to instruct several children, who in manhood were destined to act a conspicuous part in the scenes of the revolution.
He became a member of Harvard College, 1751, and was graduated in course in 1755: with what degree of reputation he left the university is not now precisely known; we only know that he was distinguished in a class of which the Dr. Hemmenway was a member, who bore honorable testimony to the openness and decision of his character, and to the strength and activity of his mind.
Having chosen the law for his profession, he commenced and prosecuted its studies under the direction of Samuel Putnam, a barrister of eminence at Worcester. By him he was introduced to the celebrated Jeremy Gridley, then attorney general of the province of Massachusetts Bay. At the first interview they became friends; Gridley at once proposed Mr. Adams for admission to the bar of Suffolk, and took him into special favor. Soon after his admission, Mr. Gridley led his young friend into a private chamber with an air of secrecy, and, pointing to a book case, said, "Sir, there is the secret of my eminence, and of which you may avail yourself as you please." It was a pretty good collection of treatises of the civil law. In this place Mr. Adams spent his days and nights, until he had made himself master of the principles of the code.

Artist: ADAMS, JOHN LUTHER Title: The Light That Fills The World Label: COLD BLUE MUSIC Format: CD Price: Catalog #: CB 0010 "These three works exist amid an undeniable esthetic spirit of the times the embracing of pre-compositional principles and structural processes in the service of a highly personal artistic statement. However, John Luther Adams' recent work tends to transcend his compositional devices it is simply potent, compelling music that is timeless in its sublimity. This is quietly expressive music in which process never intrudes on the music's 'sounding,' but churns away in the background, while the foreground shimmers with a simple yet great joy in the very making of sounds. It is a music that may be readily appreciated on both intellectual and sensual levels." 3 works from 1998-01, performed on bass clarinet, vibraphone, marimba, piano, electric keyboard, violin, doublebass. Library of Congress John Quincy Adams was the sixth President of the United States (1825-1829) and lifetime diarist. His father, John Adams , helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was the second President of the United States (1797-1801). John Quincy was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts in 1767. His early education, in mathematics, languages, and the classics, was by way of his father. He graduated from Harvard College in 1787 and studied law in Newburyport, Massachusetts under the tutelage of Theophilus Parsons . In 1790 he began the practice of law in Boston. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1802, served in various diplomatic posts and was President James Monroe's Secretary of State (1817-1825), in the opinion of many, one of the best to ever serve in that post. Adams was an abolitionist and opposed slavery in the newly admitted states. After completing his Presidency, Adams served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in 1848. John Quincy Adams

ADAMS—AD AMSON These epistles show him to have been on the most friendly terms with some of the foremost men in state and church, though his ardent protestantism offended Laud and hindered his preferment. His " occasionally" printed sermons, when collected in 1629, placed him beyond all comparison in the van of the preachers of England, and had something to do with shaping John Bunyan. He equals Jeremy Taylor in brilliance of fancies, and Thomas Fuller in wit. Robert Southey calls him " the prose Shakespeare of Puritan theologians." His numerous works display great learning, classical and patristic, and are unique in their abundance of stories, anecdotes, aphorisms and puns. His works were edited in J. P. Nichol's Puritan Divines, by J. Angus and T. Smith (3 vols. 8vo, 1862). See England's Earliest Intercourse with Japan, by C. VV. Hillary (1905); Letters written by the English Residents in Japan, ed. by N. Murakami (1900, containing Adams's Letters reprinted from Memorials of the Empire of Japan, ed. by T.
