Gregorio Allegri - A Potted Biography compiled by Ben Byram-Wigfield Gregorio Allegri was born in Rome in 1582, and became a chorister at the Papal Chapel in 1591 until 1596, when his voice broke. He subsequently became a tenor at S. Luigi del Francesca for the next 8 years, and studied with Giovanni Maria Nanino from 1600 until 1607. In 1604 he was a Singer and Composer at Tivoli and Fermi, and then became Maestro di Cappella at S. Spirito, in Sassia, Rome in 1628. 6th December 1629 saw his appointment as a singer in the Papal Choir, until his death on February 17th, 1652, aged 70. He wrote a large body of work, of both instrumental and sacred choral music, favouring the style of his mentor Nanino, and his before him, Palestrina. It was originally thought that he was born into the Corregio family, that of the late Renaissance painter Antonio Allegri, known as Corregio, but this has since been disproved. It has also been suggested by some authors that Allegri was a castrato, and that the Miserere was written especially for castrati. Allegri was employed as a Tenor, and so could not have been a castrato. Also, if the above is an accurate portrait, he would not have been able to grow a beard if had been castrated.

His wonderful Miserere for nine voices was sung there in Easter week, but the music was forbidden to be published or taken out. The young Mozart heard it and wrote it out from memory afterwards - a remarkable feat - and the music soon gained worldwide popularity. A member of the same family which produced the painter Correggio, Gregorio Allegri was born at Rome some time around 1580. He was attached to the cathedral at Fermo, as a beneficiary priest, and acted as chorister and composer. The attention of Pope Urban VIII was drawn to him through some of his motets and concertos, and he was appointed in 1629 to fill a vacancy among the singers of the Papal Choir, a post which he held until his death. The famous Miserere, written for the Sistine Chapel choirs, alternates single-line 'plainchant' with multi-part harmony to inspiring effect. Allegri seems to have been an exemplary Christian: Proske described him as "a model of priestly piety and humility, a father to the poor, the consoler of captives and the forsaken, a self-sacrificing help and rescuer of suffering humanity."

Artsworld links Classical Music, Jazz and Opera on Artsworld TV Classical Music Miserere Gregorio Allegri 'Miserere mei'. Setting of Psalm 51 for nine voices (two separate choirs of 4 and 5). Length 10 minutes. Heard in the films 'Chariots of Fire' and 'Maurice', and frequently used in TV films to accompany religious images and anything to do with the Vatican. According to legend, the music was written for exclusive performance in the Sistine Chapel and never heard outside until transcribed from memory by the young Mozart in 1770. Allegri's sublime music was written sometime before 1638 for performance in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel during the annual celebration of matins during Holy Week (Easter). Twice during that week, on Wednesday and Friday, the service would start at 3am when 27 candles were extinguished one at a time until one remained burning. At the final candle, the Pope knelt before the altar and prayed while the 'Miserere' was sung, making the climax of the service. The piece mixes two styles: plainsong (single-line chanting in unison, the 'old-style' religious vocal music) and rich polyphony (different voices singing different lines which weave in and out of each other, the 'new-style' harmony as developed by composers such as Palestrina). The 'hook' line that features the soaring soprano solo early in the work would originally have been sung by a castrato. The popularity of the work encouraged a subsequent Pope to ban all performance outside the Sistine Chapel, and transcription of the piece was forbidden, on pain of excommunication. Nevertheless, by 1770 three copies were known to exist, one owned by the King of Portugal; another by composer Giovanni Battista Martini, and a third in the Imperial Library in Vienna.

The earliest record we have of his career is that he joined the choir school at S. Luigi dei Francesi in Rome in 1591. He stayed there until 1596, when his soprano voice broke. About 1607 he left Rome to take up a post as singer and composer at the cathedral in Fermo at the outskirts of the papal state. He apparently stayed there until 1628, when he returned to Rome to take the competitive examination for admittance to the papal choir. He successfully completed the exam and became a part of the choir in 1629. In addition to the prestige of belonging to this organization, and the attendant guaranteed salary for life, Allegri enjoyed the opportunity to study and consult with some of the finest musical minds of his time. Gregorio Allegri Works During the next 23 years until his death, 1652, Allegri composed a number of masses, motets, and a small number of instrumental works, including a four-part sonata for string ensemble that might be considered an important early string quartet, written as it was over a century before F.J. Seine wohl berühmteste Komposition ist das neun stimmige Miserere, welches bis 1870 jedes Jahr in der Karwoche in der Sixtinischen Kapelle aufgeführt wurde. Das Stück stand in so hohem Ansehen, daß die Sixtina die Exklusivrechte daran beanspruchte. Jeder, der das Werk abschrieb oder druckte, wurde exkommuniziert. Dieses Stück schrieb der 14jährige Mozart in der Karwoche 1770 nach einmaligem Hören aus dem Gedächtnis nieder.
