Byl tu poprvé a byl upøímnì nadšený. Nejvíc se mu líbil Tanèící dùm. Publikum, které si tuto energickou až agresivní repetitivní hudbu, které dominuje zvuk žesových nástrojù, kláves a elektrických kytar, pøišlo do industriálních prostor pražské Thámovky a brnìnské Vaòkovky poslechnout, však poznalo jen jednu tváø Louise Adriessena. Tu, která mu vysloužila pøízvisko evropského minimalisty. Ta ovšem není jediná. Jak dosvìdèuje skladba De Tijd (Èas), je schopen psát i nesmírnì pomalou, tichou a nìžnou hudbu. Navíc, spokojit se pro Andriessena s minimalistickou nálepku by bylo velmi zjednodušující. Jeho hudba je za mnohé vdìèná také jazzu a popu, doma mu vštípili náklonnost k francouzské hudbì a Igoru Stravinskému, o kterém dokonce napsal knihu, a nesmíme zapomínat ani na dìdictví evropské avantgardy, jejímž byl Andriessen v mládí pøíznivcem (studoval u Luciana Beria). Takovou akcí byla kupøíkladu Notenkrakersactie , jejíž název vychází z holandské slovní høíèky („Notenkraker“ znamená jak „louskáèek na oøechy“, tak „louskáèek na noty“) a která pøedpokládala nejprve radikálnì nové uspoøádání umìleckého vedení slavného orchestru Concertgebouw a poté pøestrukturování celé staré hudební praxe. Andriessenova kompozice De Staat (1973-1976) už je realistiètìjší, a tudíž proveditelná, protože její partitura sestává pouze z hudby, a ne ze spoleèenských požadavkù. Pøesto i v ní chtìl Andriessen pøispìt k diskusi o postavení hudby ve státì. Vychází z tvrzení, že nejen provádìní a konzumace skladby, ale už i její komponování je sociálním aktem. Podle Andriessena stojí nad sociální rovinou pouze abstraktní hudební materiál v podobì „pøírodnì“ daných výšek, délek a rytmu („neexistuje nic takového jako fašistický dominantní septakord“ – „there is no such thing as a fascist dominant seven“). Jakékoli jejich uspoøádávání – tedy práce skladatele – je sociálním faktem. Pro svou kompozici si – ze dvou protikladných dùvodù – vybral ètyøi úseky ze tøetí a ètvrté knihy Platónovy Ústavy .
