GRAZYNA BACEWICZ - 1909-1969 POLAND - COMPOSER
Grazyna Bacewicz, born in 1909 in L¢dz, died in 1969 in Warsaw. When she was ten years old her instructions at the L¢dz Conservatory began in playing the violin and piano. After having completed her secondary edu cation at the grammar school in L¢dz she left for Warsaw where she took up studying composition under Kazimierz Sikorski, violin playing under Jozef Jarzebski and piano playing under Jozef Turczynski at the Warsaw Conservatory. She continued her studies in composition under Nadia Boulanger in Paris and in violin playing under Andre Touret and Carl Flesch. Grazyna Bacewicz appeared as a violinist with orchestras conducted among others by Paul Kletzki, George Georgescu, Hermann Abendroth and Constantin Silvestri.
From about 1953 she had begun to withdraw from concertizing so as to devote more time to composition. Since 1966 she had taught a composition class at the State School of Music (formerly the Warsaw Conservatory).
Grazyna Bacewicz was awarded prizes at many international competitions for composers, among others in Liege (String Quartets Nos 4 and 5 1951 and 1956 respectively), in Paris (UNESCO International Composers' Rostrum, 1960 - Music for Strings, Trumpets and Percus sion) and in Brussels (Violin Concerto No.7 - 1966). She was given two times the State Award for artistic accomplishment (in 1950 and 1952), the Award of the Polish Composers' Union (1960) and many other prizes at home. For many years she had been Vice Chairman of the Polish Composers' Union.

Grazyna Bacewicz's
Second Piano Sonata (1953):
Octave Expansion and Sonata Form
by Ann K. McNamee Associate Professor Swarthmore College amcname1@swarthmore.edu
ABSTRACT
If Grazyna Bacewicz's music is so "conservative" and "neoclassical," why is it so difficult to define the beginning and ending of the Development in one of her best-known works, the first movement of her Piano Sonata II? Thirty students and colleagues arrived at nearly thirty different answers to this question. I propose a linear analysis to best define the Development's parameters, an analysis which reveals a large-scale octave descent in the bass register. This octave descent spans neither the major nor the minor scale, but instead prolongs a Polish folk mode known as the Podhalean mode. The entire score of the first movement, and a recording of it, can be found via the following link:
INTRODUCTION
Internationally acclaimed as both a concert violinist and a composer, Grazyna Bacewicz (1909-1969) holds a place in history as "the greatest woman composer of her time, and the most prolific female composer of all time." Her national and international awards for composition are numerous, reaching their peak during the 1950's. In terms of Polish music history, Bacewicz succeeded Szymanowski in the leadership role in her country, before relinquishing that position to Lutoslawski and Penderecki. Her relative obscurity in the U.S. may be due to the conservative language of her music, reflecting her choice to conform to the political pressures of her times. Bacewicz's music most often receives the adjectives "neoclassical," "conservative," and "influenced by Polish folk music." Perhaps this apparent passivity was of less interest to Americans than the rebelliousness and modernism of Lutoslawski.

A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Bacewicz, a Polish composer and violinist, was born on February 5, 1909 in £ód¼ and died on January 17, 1969 in Warsaw. Her father was Lithuanian; a music teacher, he succeeded in directing three of his four children towards the music profession: Witold (Vytautas) returned to Lithuania and became a composer, Kiejstut stayed in £ód¼ as a pianist (he frequently accompanied his sister), and the youngest, Wanda, worked as a journalist, broadcaster and a poet. Gra¿yna studied at the Warsaw Conservatory under Kazimierz Sikorski, Józef Jarzêbski and Józef Turczyñski, receiving her two diplomas in 1932 (composition and violin); she was also an accomplished pianist. In addition, she studied at the faculty of philosophy at the University of Warsaw, but decided to abandon these studies because of the pressure of her workload as a violinist, pianist and composer. In 1933 she completed her advanced studies in composition in Paris under Nadia Boulanger and studies in violin performance with Andre Tourret and Carl Flesh. Until 1952 she combined compositional and performance activities; her double career was filled with numerous successes. On European stages she gave recitals and concerts directed by such eminent conductors as Paul Kletzki, George Georgescu, Hermann Abendroth, and Constantin Silvestri. For her work in both domains she was awarded many national and international prizes, including UNESCO International Composers' Rostrum. Her music - highly valued by both conductors and performers - was increasingly found on programs of concerts and festivals in Poland and abroad.

She studied in her native country (at Lodz and Warsaw) and also under the renowned music teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris. She was acclaimed as a performer and a composer, but increasingly concentrated on writing her own works. In 1951 her fourth string quartet was awarded first prize in the International Composers' Competition. Her compositions are principally neoclassical in style; they include four symphonies and seven violin concertos. Bacewicz taught at the Lodz conservatory before and after World War II. She later took up a post at the Warsaw Academy, working there until her death.
