MICHAEL WILLIAM BALFE

(1808 - 1870) composer and singer
Born 15 th Jun 1808, Dublin Born at 10 Pitt Street (later Balfe Street, now demolished). Became proficient violinist at an early age. After his father’s death in 1823 he went to London as an apprentice under Charles Edward Horn, a noted singer, and played the violin in Drury Lane Theatre orchestra to support himself and his mother. In London he found a patron, Count Mazzara, who took him to Italy. Was commissioned by La Scala in Milan to write the music for a ballet, La Pérouse , which won instant success. Went to Paris and met Rossini, who arranged tuition for him and a successful engagement to sing Figaro at the Théâtre des Italiens in 1827, retained for three years at a very generous salary. He returned to Italy in 1830 and met and married Lina Rosa, a talented Hungarian singer. In 1833 he was back in England and wrote several operas for Drury Lane, The Siege of Rochelle being best received. In 1838 his Falstaff was produced at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Later that year he toured Ireland. In 1841 he started his own opera company in London, but this proved a failure. He then went to Paris, where his

Consider the Lilies Cracovienne. (A fast-moving, syncopated Polish dance of peasant origin associated with the country around Cracow, the cracovienne , or according to its native name krakoviak , enjoyed for a time a great vogue in Europe and in America. The dance was introduced to the Parisian stage during 1834-39 by the celebrated Austrian dancer Fanny Elssler, who, after appearances in London, visited the United States in 1840-43. Chopin used the traditional melody in his "Krakoviak," op. 14, for piano and orchestra, and other composers wrote variations on the tune. It is reproduced in Grove's' Dictionary of Music and Musicians cachucha . She was the daughter of Haydn's music copyist at Esterhazy.) The Ingle Side. Time for another King Arthur We haven't had one for 15 centuries, says Smallweed Smallweed
Saturday March 9, 2002
The Guardian
Reports that Prince William is already bored with St Andrews and would like to move to somewhere more entertaining must have shocked those who argue that when the Queen dies, the crown should skip a generation, evading Prince Charles and moving directly to William. They make this assertion in the belief, for which there is little evidence, that William is somehow better equipped for kingship than Charles. If I were a monarchist, which I am not, I would settle this issue by asking one simple question. Which of the pair is willing to call himself Arthur? It's high time we had another King Arthur, since the only one in our history occurred 15 centuries back. If he ever existed at all, that is, which some say he didn't. Both Charles (Charles Philip Arthur George) and William (William Arthur Philip Louis) are Arthurs, and there's nothing to say that, as kings, they should have to use the names they grew up with. Lots of kings didn't. Edward VII, for instance, grew up as David and George VI as Bertie. JH Judge (Worplesdon, Surrey) writes:

November 9, 2000 Richard Bonynge's passion for the music of 19th-century England and some of its colourful characters has finally borne fruit in this impressive recording of British arias that will cause all its listeners to reconsider the merits of composers such as Sir Arthur Sullivan, Michael Balfe and William Wallace. While these composers were never musical trendsetters and their operas have long been out of fashion, the quality of their work (if this disc is any indication) is still of a very high standard. Consider the rich and varied orchestration for 'Placida Notte' from Il Talismano by Balfe or the vivid characterisation of 'Lord of Our Chosen Race' from Sullivan's great work Ivanhoe Deborah Riedel returns Bonynge's enthusiasm with equal commitment, bringing to life the jewel-like feeling of 'Little Princess, Look Up!' from
