The son of a doctor, Bantock was educated for a post in the Indian Civil Service. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1889 to 1893, and from 1894 to 1895 travelled the world as a conductor. In 1897 he was appointed musical director of the Tower, New Brighton, and in 1900 principal of the Birmingham School of Music. In 1908 he succeeded Elgar as Peyton professor at Birmingham University, remaining in that post until 1934. He then became chairman of the Corporation of Trinity College of Music. He was a great friend of Sibelius; was made an honorary MA and a doctor of music at Edinburgh University, and was knighted in 1930.

A Brief Introduction to the Life and Work of Sir Granville Bantock by Vincent Budd
This is a much-needed corrected and revised version of the essay hurriedly put together a couple of years ago for this site. It also now includes a few photos some of which have kindly been supplied by Anton Bantock, GB's grandson, from his recently collated set of prints. see new booklet This is a long article (15 A4 sides)

oeuvre are some of the noblest and individual creations of the last hundred years. Such was the scale of his musical intent and the breadth of his inspiration, his music when occasioned, as in some of his piano arrangements for example, simply reveals the everyday embellishment of his skill, mere divertissement, and the more immediately practical and professional musicality of the commercial commission - unlike a number of other more monied composers, GB depended on his music for a living his neglect is unwarranted. If the recent 50th anniversary of his death was met with only a minimal recognition in the hegemonic echelons of our musical polity, then the recent set of CD recordings, particularly on the Hyperion label, has once again laid before us the true musical stature of some of his greatest scores and will hopefully help to bring about a renewed interest in the composer.

9. The Bantock Society:
bantock, granville (1868 1946) granville bantock played an important part in the development and promotion of English music, both as a conductor and as a teacher and educational administrator.
http://www.musicweb.uk.net/bantock
THE BANTOCK SOCIETY was founded in 1946 under the presidency of Jean Sibelius. A Trust Fund was initially established to promote interest in the life and work of Bantock and amongst the original signatories were Bax, Boult, Boughton, Brian, Dyson, Goosens and Vaughan Williams. Beecham's famous recording of Fifine at the Fair was partly funded by the Society. Since then, the Society has endured, if somewhat intermittently, in the service of Bantock's music. October 1996 marked the 50th anniversary of GB's death and with the recent flourish of excellent recordings and the current revival of interest in the composer's music the Society continues with renewed vigour. The Society now publishes The Bantock Society Journal twice a year in the winter and summer, with two supplementary newsletters in the spring and autumn. The Journal contains articles on Bantock's life and music as well as Society news, details of concerts, letters, books and CD reviews, and acts as a forum of discussion to which members are invited to contribute. You may read an illustrative article: Granville Bantock: The Hebridean Connection by Vincent Budd . The Newsletter keeps members up to date and in touch with all aspects of Bantock-related events. The society also organises meetings, lectures and recitals of Bantock's music. All members will receive the

Granville Bantock played an important part in the development and promotion of English music, both as a conductor and as a teacher and educational administrator. Relatively conservative in musical language, he was attracted to the treatment of exotic subjects, Persian, Chinese, Russian and Scottish, in his works for the theatre and choral and orchestral compositions, and retains a more familiar position in the field of English song.
