Samuel Barber Samuel Barber's music, masterfully crafted and built on romantic structures and sensibilities, is at once lyrical, rhythmically complex, and harmonically rich. Born 9 March 1910 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Barber wrote his first piece at age 7 and attempted his first opera at age 10. At the age of 14 he entered the Curtis Institute, where he studied voice, piano, and composition. Later, he studied conducting with Fritz Reiner. At Curtis, Barber met Gian Carlo Menotti with whom he would form a lifelong personal and professional relationship. Menotti supplied libretti for Barber's operas Vanessa (for which Barber won the Pulitzer) and A Hand of Bridge . Barber's music was championed by a remarkable range of renowned artists, musicians, and conductors including Vladimir Horowitz, John Browning, Martha Graham, Arturo Toscanini, Dmitri Mitropoulos, Jennie Tourel, and Eleanor Steber. His Antony and Cleopatra was commissioned to open the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in 1966. Barber was the recipient of numerous awards and prizes including the American Prix de Rome , two Pulitzers, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His intensely lyrical

Samuel Barber
American composer Samuel Barber often confuses critics. He founded no school; he stuck to no one style. As a public figure, he seemed aloof from the various critical fights of American music: tonal vs. atonal, Stravinsky vs. Schoenberg, and old-guard vs. modern. Almost all the other big names of American modernism - Aaron Copland Roy Harris Walter Piston David Diamond Leonard Bernstein Virgil Thomson Roger Sessions , and Milton Babbitt - allied themselves with particular camps. Barber seemed just to write music, and, in so doing, became controversial, someone to be attacked or defended. Barber distinguished himself as a melodist. Almost everything he wrote has at least one gorgeous tune or memorable theme. This alone got him into trouble in certain circles as a stick-in-the-mud or even as a panderer to the vulgar. However, his gift also genuinely puzzled people. There is nothing in a Barber piece that instantly proclaims the composer, as a Copland, Ralph Vaughan Williams , or Sergei Prokofieff work surely does. His melodic emphasis led certain critics to label him "neo-Romantic," a word that doesn't mean all that much. Almost nothing he wrote could have been produced in the Romantic era. The harmonies are too complex and sometimes extremely dissonant, the approach to form is as modern as Igor Stravinsky 's, and the orchestration is usually quite experimental. That his music sounds full and rich simply means that the experiment succeeds.

Barber profile
SAMUEL BARBER Before my university studies, I did not really know much about classical music. I knew with certainty that music was what I loved and wanted most to do. So I then started my studies in music education. I discovered favorite composers with a sense of utter fascination about their music. It was everything old yet new to me. First I loved Antonio Vivaldi and then Claude Debussy, primarily Debussy’s piano music. Then during my second year of study I discovered Samuel Barber. I found Barber’s music rather innocently, not suspecting the level of adoration I would soon possess. In the Fall semester, the Minot State University Wind Ensemble performed Commando March. The music seemed to get to me so it was "under my skin." I loved the rich brass sounds, the bits of solo percussion near the beginning of the piece, the seamless craftsmanship that hid a shifting beat in the middle section. For me it was just a wonderful piece of music to play and hear.

Barber, Samuel (1910 - 1981)
Samuel Barber is widely known for his famous Adagio for Strings, the slow movement of a string quartet he wrote in 1936. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1910, he was one of the first students at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where he studied piano, conducting, singing and composition. Awards allowed subsequent study in Rome. He taught briefly at the Curtis Institute, but soon withdrew, sharing a house with his former fellow student Menotti. His music remained neo-romantic in idiom, although not without contemporary influences. Orchestral Music The Adagio for Strings was arranged for string orchestra from the slow movement of Barber's string quartet of 1936 and played in this form by the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Toscanini in New York two years later, in a programme that included his first Essay. Other orchestral compositions include an overture, The School for Scandal, which had won him an award in 1933, concertos for violin, for cello and for piano, a Capricorn Concerto for solo wind instruments and two symphonies. SAMUEL OSBORNE BARBER
M usic-making was always a part of Samuel Barber's life, from his earliest years. The nephew of contralto Louise Homer and her husband, the prolific song writer Sidney Homer , Barber had announced his vocation in a note written to his mother at the age of nine:
"I was meant to be a composer and will be I'm sure...Don't ask me to try to forget this unpleasant thing and go play footballplease." Samuel Osborne Barber II was born March 9, 1910, in West Chester, PA, the son of a prominent doctor. Young Sam studied piano at six, began composing at seven, served as a church organist while still in his teens, and developed his attractive baritone voice to the point where he entertained the thought of becoming a professional singer. Enrolled in the newly-founded Curtis Institute at fourteen, Barber studied piano with Isabelle Vengerova, composition with Rosario Scalero, singing with Emilio de Gogorza, and conducting with Fritz Reiner and formed a life-long friendship with Giancarlo Menotti, whom he met in 1928 in Philadelphia. Two years of training in Italy after winning the 1935 Prix de Rome and numerous European jaunts helped the emerging composer to shake off the conservative influences of Homer and Scalero and shape his own distinctive musical language. Barber composed a wide range of stage, orchestral, chamber, piano, choral, and vocal works in what he unassumingly insisted was a personal style "born of what I feel..I am not a self-conscious composer." His discipline and use of traditional forms earned him the reputation of a classicist. Virgil Thomson once wrote that Barber was laying to rest the ghost of Romanticism without violence, though in light of the composer's lush lyricism, deft dramatic sense, and inclination toward Romantic poetic sources (especially in his vocal writing), this comment ultimately proved to be off-mark. Throughout his catalogue of works, Barber adhered stubbornly to his own inner voicea voice rich in subtlety and sumptuousness that relied deeply on melody, polyphony, and complex musical texturesall fused with an unerring instinct for graceful proportion and an unabashed affinity for Romantic thought and emotion.

The Washington Opera in the District of Columbia has announced performances of Vanessa with Kiri Te Kanawa in the title role on October 19, 23, 26, and 29, and November 1, 4, 7, and 10 (matinee), 2002. Washington Post review of Vanessa performance with Kiri Te Kanawa Bernard Holland wrote of the Washington Vanessa in the New York Times of October 30, 2002: "Kiri Te Kanawa has spent a long, prosperous career riding the surfaces of important roles. At this stage the part of Vanessa must hit home in several ways, and the powers of identification work to her advantage. The voice remains absolutely beautiful, with few if any scars of age. But it remained for the evening's Erika, a splendid young soprano named Lucy Schaufer, to provide 'Vanessa' with the necessary heat." The June 30, 2001, performance of Vanessa by Des Moines Metro Opera received a very favorable review from Robert C. Fuller in the Des Moines Register , July 2, 2001.
