Black Britons Francis Barber Francis Barber was born in Jamaica around 1735. He came to Britain with a planter from the island. For one year he went to school in the small village of Barton nr Darlington in Yorkshire England. Then as he got older he entered the service of his owners son who sent him to work for the Writer Samuel Johnson who's wife had just died. However as Francis was a young man and high spirited, he ran away to cheapside and worked as an apothecary's assistant. He did however keep in touch with Samuel Johnson. However in 1758 Francis went to sea serving 2 years on H.M.S. Stag. When Barber left School he went to work for Johnson, not just as a valet but as a secretary and personal assistant. After Samuel Johnson died Francis Barber told an interviewer that Johnson had hated to be waited on and they were good companions who both lived and prayed together.

U hoort nu van Samuel Barber: Vioolconcerto, 3de deel Samuel Barber, geboren op 9 maart 1910 te Westchester (Pennsylvanië), kwam uit een zeer rijke en muzikale familie. Zijn tante was de beroemde alt Louise Homer. Zelf was hij een zeer begaafd pianist, zanger en cellist. Op zijn veertiende was hij reeds leerling aan het Curtis Institute van Philadelphia. Hij studeerde er af met de schitterende ouverture 'The School for Scandal'. Voor zijn symfonie en het beroemde 'Adagio for Strings' kreeg hij de Prix de Rome. Zijn componeerstijl was aanvankelijk zeer traditioneel, bijna zonder Amerikaanse invloeden. Dat gaf zijn muziek een onpersoonlijk karakter, ondanks de melodische vindingrijkheid en expressiviteit. Pas vanaf 1940 kwam daar verandering in, wanneer hij zijn muziek een persoonlijk tintje meegaf, zoals Igor Stravinsky dat had gedaan. Vanaf dan zijn de Amerikaanse invloeden wél duidelijk merkbaar. Hij ging onder meer atonale pianomuziek schrijven en maakte gebruik van levendige ritmes en contrapunt. Zijn beste werken schreef hij in de jaren '40: het vioolconcerto 'Essays for Orchestra' en de sopraansolo 'Knoxville: Summer of 1915'. Hij schreef ook koormuziek en een aantal prachtige liederen zoals 'Prayers of Kierkegaard'. Zijn twee opera's 'Vanessa' en 'Anthony and Cleopatra' werden niet zo'n succes. Hierdoor zag hij verder gaan met componeren niet meer zitten.
