Jan. 1981 in New York Samuel Barbers Kompositionen - besonders sein Adagio für Streicher - gehören zu den meistaufgeführtesten Musikwerken Amerikas. Als Vertreter der neuromantischen Musik wurde er bekannt und zählt heute zu den wichtigsten Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Mit vierzehn Jahren begann er 1924 sein Studium (Klavier und Komposition) am Curtis Institute of Music in Philadephia. Nachdem er seine Ausbildung abgeschlossen hatte, gewann er mit seiner Konzertouvertüre The School of Scandal 1933 den Bearns-Preis der Columbia University. Weitere Auszeichnungen, wie der Pulitzer Preis - den er für seine Oper Vanessa erhielt - und der amerikanische Rom-Preis folgten. 1942 wurde er zum Dienst bei der amerikanischen Luftwaffe eingezogen. Erfahrungen aus dieser Zeit schlugen sich auch in seiner Musik nieder. In Barbers Kompositionen lässt sich eine Entwicklung zur komplexen Rhythmik, Chromatik und verstärkten Einbringung dissonanter Elemente beobachten.
