He based many of his ideas on the raw harmonies and structures of old Hungarian folk songs, of which he and the composer Zoltan Kodaly collected many thousands, yet, unlike other nationalist composers, he remained unsentimental and original. Born in 1881 into a musical family in Nagyszentmiklos, in the Austro-Hungarian empire (now Sinnicolau Mare, part of Romania), Bartok was a frail child and always reserved and shy. On his fifth birthday, his mother started giving him piano lessons. When his father died in 1888, she took complete charge of his musical training. She was prepared to move town and change jobs in order for Bartok to be near a good teacher. Bartok was a talented pianist and began composing early. He studied with Ferencz Erkel and met Erno von Dohnanyi, whom he succeeded in an organist's job. Winning an award from the Emperor Franz Josef, Bartok elected not to go to Vienna as was then expected, but instead went to the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest, emphasising his sense of national identity.
