Leslie Bassett's Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra was premiered by Clifford Leaman and the Orchestre Symphonique de Laval, Louis Lavigueur, conductor, at the World Saxophone Congress, July 5, 2000 in Montreal. A concert of Bassett's music commissioned by Mu Phi Epsilon, May 20, 2000 in Ann Arbor, MI, included the first performances of Song of the Aulos , with solo oboist Susan Bissiri; Two Stephens Songs , with mezzo-soprano Lori Gould and pianist Gail Jennings; and The Three Graces , with flutists Deborah Ash, Penny Fischer, and Susan Whitener.

(b. January 22, 1923) received early musical training in California. Following service as trombonist and arranger with Army bands in the U.S., France and Germany during World War II, he became a pupil of Ross Lee Finney, Roberto Gerhard, and, as a 1950 Fulbright Fellow, with Nadia Boulanger and Arthur Honegger in Paris. He has been awarded the Rome Prize at the American Academy in Rome, two Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships, the Naumburg Recording Award, and is the Albert A. Stanley Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of Michigan, where he was the 1984 Henry Russel Lecturer, the University's highest faculty honor. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Mr. Bassett received the 1966 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his Variations for Orchestra, following its U.S. premiere by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. His U.S. Bicentennial score, Echoes from an Invisible World, has received over 60 performances by the country's finest orchestras. There have been performances of some of his dozen orchestral scores by Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Rome, Zurich, Chicago, Detroit, Florida, Seattle, Indianapolis, Moravia, Grand Rapids, Oporto, Syracuse, Baltimore, American Composers Orchestra, Toledo, and others. His most recent Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra (Peters #67970) will be released on Equilibrium Records in performance by Clifford Leaman and the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, Kenneth Kiesler, conductor.

Image Bank Professor Leslie R. Bassett of the School of Music was awarded the 1966 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition Variations for Orchestra which was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Bassett, on the faculty since 1952, was an internationally recognized composer, having won the Prix de Rome in 1961. Three other UM professors have won music Pulitzers: University Carilloneur Percival Price in 1934 for his St. Lawrence Symphony ; Ross Lee Finney for a string quartet in 1937; and William Bolcom for Twelve New Etudes for Piano in 1988. September 26, 2001 (41) Festival features works of Leslie Bassett ANN ARBOR-Works by American composer Leslie Bassett, the University of Michigan's Albert A. Stanley Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Music , will be performed in a two-day festival by Brave New Works . The performances on Oct. 6 and 7 will each begin at 8 p.m. in Britton Recital Hall at U-M's School of Music. The concerts are free and open to the public. Bassett will discuss his music before each concert. The Oct. 7 program will include "Temperaments" and "Fourth String Quartet." Bassett is a Pulitzer Prize winner and recipient of various other awards including a Fulbright and two Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships. While attending U-M he was a pupil of Ross Lee Finney, served in World War II as a trombonist, arranger, and composer for an army band. He has received commissions from a variety of institutions including the National Endowment for the Arts , the Philadelphia Orchestra and Detroit Symphony . Bassett joined U-M's School of Music faculty in 1952, later becoming chair of the composition department.
