May 14, 2001 Amy Marcey Cheney Beach American composer and pianist The body of work that Beach produced stands out for its size as well as its quality. She also stands out as the first woman to master larger forms. Her Symphony in E (the "Gaelic") demonstrates this, and is one of the first works by an American to answer Antonin Dvorák's challenge to use national themes in their compositions. Beach believed that since a large percentage of Boston's citizens were of Irish extraction, this would be the most representative source to draw upon. Many of her works have remained popular in this century, and her music is receiving a fairer re-evaluation as a result of the general interest in the music of women and the special circumstances of its creation. There are two recordings each of the piano concerto and “Gaelic” symphony, but not one of her delightful light orchestral work, Bal masque, played recently by the Boston Pops. Also in the half empty department are concert arias, the Mary Stuart soliloquy, Eilende Wolken, Segler der Lüfte, for mezzo and orchestra, and Jephthah’s Daughter, for soprano and orchestra—singers, take note. Of her songs, about one third are recorded to date, among them the best known—e.g., the three Browning songs—and lesser known but stunning “Rendez-vous” and “In the Twilight.” Still awaiting singers are many fine songs. Block’s long-awaited biography—the first thorough scholarly study of Beach’s career—bestows upon Beach her rightful place among the important musical figures of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Block’s narrative can be divided into three parts. The first part chronicles Beach’s upbringing and years in Boston. Particularly significant are her discussions about Beach’s relationships with her mother, Clara Cheney, and her husband, Dr. Henry Beach. Block also examines Beach’s development as a composer, focusing on her first large-scale works, the Mass in E b and the “Gaelic” Symphony. In an era where women received little respect, and American composers practically none, Amy Beach stood out as the only successful female American composer, a position which she held for over half a century. As with many of her male European predecessors, she displayed her musical talents early, harmonizing her mother's lullabies at the age of two, and notating bird songs on staff paper while still a child. One of her more intriguing traits was her ability to associate colors with music: she would often ask her mother to play the ``purple'' or the ``green'' song. Beginning piano studies at six, Amy developed her abilities rapidly, and made her public debut at 16, performing music by Moscheles and Chopin (accompanied by an unnamed ``grand orchestra,'' according to the program). This and subsequent performances received consistently good notices, though reviewers of the time were often unable to avoid disparaging comments about her sex. She seemed destined for an illustrious musical career when at 18 she married Dr. Henry Harris Aubrey Beach, a prominent physician and society man 25 years her senior. The marriage caused some to suggest that the doctor would not allow his wife's music-making to continue (speculation which has misled even some modern writers), but such was not the case. Indeed, Dr. Beach encouraged his wife's talents, to the extent of having a superb studio built in their home for her use in practicing and composing. The new Mrs. Beach immediately began work on a large-scale Mass in E flat, which was followed a few years later by the present work. In short order, she was achieving great success with her compositions. (It is worth noting that, although she received excellent training at the keyboard, Amy Cheney's formal education in composition was minimal, probably because it was not considered an appropriate subject for a young woman. She became the country's foremost woman composer and one of the most popular composers of her time. Amateur pianists formed Amy Beach Clubs in her honor. Symphonies across the U.S. - New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, St. Louis, Los Angeles - performed her orchestral pieces. A jubilee in Washington, D.C., honoring her 75th birthday devoted two nights to her work. She was the first American woman to compose a symphony. At 25, she was the first woman to have work performed by the Handel and Haydn Society in Boston. And she was a virtuoso pianist who performed her compositions with orchestras in the U.S. and Europe. "She is an example of someone in a pretty repressed time who became a role model," said Peggy Vagts, chairwoman of the music department at the University of New Hampshire . Return via your browser's Back button New wave of women led by a Beach lover By Brian Hunt The Mail on Sunday, 28 November 28 1999 One can hardly be surprised that the music of American composer Amy Beach should evoke a repressed life force struggling for freedom. Amy Marcy Cheney - who would later take the surname Beach on marriage - had an exceptional musical gift. It became manifest soon after her birth in 1867, but her strict Victorian mother was not overly encouraging. When, at six, Amy was finally allowed music lessons, the piano might still be locked as a punishment. A composer from infancy, she was being published by the age of 16. Two years later, when her dual career as a composer and concert pianist was burgeoning, she married Dr H.H.A. Beach, a surgeon well established in Boston society (he was actually older than her father). The assumption of social and domestic duties suspended her performing career until her husband's death in 1910. It would be wrong to present Amy Beach as a martyr - her mother sought to discipline her talent, not stifle it, and her husband encouraged her composing - but the sense of reined-in passion is hard to ignore. The 1939 Piano Trio, Op 50, a sequence of fleeting visions and muffled cries, has a claustrophobic airlessness. This seems to intensify rather than limit the music's potency, and the jaunty finale's dispersal of tension gains in effect. The Piano Quintet in F sharp minor begins with an unashamedly Brahmsian sweep - but not even Brahms would keep the textures as dark, unventilated and close as this.
