AMY AT THE BEACH (Dec '96 Issue) If you take Highway 1 out of San Francisco, through Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, you'll see a large orange flag at the entrance to a parking lot, just before you reach the San Gregorio State Beach entrance. Pull in there, pay your modest parking fee, climb down the path to the ocean, and you'll find a beautiful stretch of beach that is only accessible from the state beach at very low tide. I used to stop there for an hour or so when I was driving all over the area ads a service engineer. The place is so popular with gays from San Francisco that it's often called Cock Sucker Beach. While the sun is usually quite warm, there is often a fair breeze that blows sand around rather briskly. Over the years little walls have been built of the rubble that collects at the base of the cliffs. The little rooms that are formed looked a bit like an Anasazi ruin, but they provide both protection from being sand-blasted and a modicum of privacy. As waves knock down the walls, they are quickly rebuilt. I kept my job for a while after I moved into the commune, and occasionally someone would ride around with me while I was working. When she wasn't busy with her classes at UCSF or dancing in the club out on North Beach, Amy liked to travel around with me. She was considerably younger, in her early twenties, we spent a lot of nights together. In our group, we weren't overly concerned with the common hang-ups about age, color, and gender. If we liked each other, we got together.

Sarina Steinbarth, a junior majoring in international studies and economics, will spend next summer in Cape Town, South Africa, as a volunteer for the organization, which is focused on the development of non-violent, functional people, working most extensively with youths. The Amy Biehl Foundation is named after the 1989 Stanford graduate and Fulbright Scholar who was murdered just outside of Cape Town in 1993 at the age of 26. She was killed while working to help South African blacks and women vote in the country's first all-race elections. Founded by her family in 1994, the foundation works to prevent youth-perpetrated violence in South Africa and the United States by providing program opportunities in education, sports and recreation, arts, employable skills and safety. "I wanted to help others, and I really like kids," said Steinbarth, a CSULB President's Scholar with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. "South Africa to me is a country with a lot of deep issues, especially where its young people are concerned. I think the foundation's idea of getting at the root of the problem with the children by offering activities that keep them focused and out of trouble is a good one."

The Edward Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River Esplanade is one of Boston's best-known landmarks. But why was Amy Beach, one of Boston's most successful and celebrated composers, not included in the 86 composers' names chosen to decorate the Shell? Dr. Liane Curtis, Musicologist, has investigated the choice of the original names (dating from its construction in 1940). Further, she and the Boston Women's Heritage Trail proposed to the MDC that Beach's name be added to the Shell, an initiative that drew support from Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, and other musicians and scholars, both locally and nationally. Curtis's lively presentation will introduce Beach and her stunning musical achievements, as well as the history of the Shell. The MDC has added Beach's name to the Shell, and the Pops, led by Maestro Lockhart, celebrated the addition by performing some of Beach's music in their Hatch Shell concert on Saturday evening, July 8. Liane Curtis, Ph.D., Musicology, is Resident Scholar in Women's Studies at Brandeis University.

As it was, Beach's talent was prodigious and widely recognized in her own time. Born in 1867 to a musical family, the young Amy was playing the piano by ear by the time she was four. Had she been a boy, no doubt a brilliant career as a concert pianist would have followed; instead, Amy married a much older man and mostly confined her musical genius to once-yearly concerts and to composing. Beach was prolific and eclectic, writing a Mass, a symphony (her "Gaelic" Symphony was the first work by an American woman composer to be performed by an American orchestra) and chamber music. In later years, after her husband's death, Beach toured the world as a performer. In her extensive biography of Amy Beach, Adrienne Fried Block examines both the composer's life and work.
