    Bellini, Vincenzo (1801 - 1835)
Vincenzo Bellini was one of the most important composers of Italian opera in the earlier years of the 19th century. He died in Paris in 1835 at the height of his success. Bellini's influence was not confined to opera and Chopin owes much to him, particularly in his handling of melody. Although Bellini is known primarily as a composer of opera, his Oboe Concerto enjoys some popularity. Operas Bellini's first great success was in 1827 when Il Pirata was staged at La Scala, Milan. The six further operas that he wrote include a version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, I Capuletti i Montecchi, the famous and complicated La Sonnambula produced in Milan in 1831, the demanding opera set in Roman Gaul, Norma, staged at La Scala at the end of the same year, and the final work, I Puritani, mounted in Paris in 1835. towards the year 1505, the portrait of the doge Loredano in the National Gallery, the only portrait by the master which has been preserved, and in its own manner one of the most masterly in the whole range of painting. Both in the artistic and in the worldly sense, the career of Giovanni Bellini was upon the whole the most serenely and unbrokenly prosperous, from youth to extreme old age, which fell to the lot of any artist of the early Renaissance. He lived to see his own school far outshine that of his rivals, the Vivarini of Murano; he embodied, with ever growing and maturing power, all the devotional gravity and much also of the worldly splendour of the Venice of his time; and he saw his influence propagated by a host of pupils, two of whom at least, Giorgione and Titian, surpassed their master. Giorgione he outlived by five years; Titian, as we have seen, challenged an equal place beside his teacher. Among the best known of his other pupils were, in his earlier time, Andrea Previtali, Cima da Conegliano, Marco B asaiti, Niccolo Rondinalli, Piermaria Pennacchi, Martino da Udine, Girolamo Mocetto; in later time, Pierfrancesco Bissolo, Vincenzo Catena, Lorenzo Lotto and Sebastian del Piombo. BELLINI, LORENZO (1643—1704), Italian physician and anatomist, was born at Florence on the 3rd of September 1643.

September 1835 in Paris.

He acquired his musical training from his grandfather and father, and began composing religious and secular music in his childhood. His first opera, Adelson e Salvini, was successfully performed in 1825. His most celebrated works are the operas La Sonnambula and Norma (both 1831). In their profusely melodic style they exemplify the bel canto tradition of the 18th cent., and their roles demand great virtuosity of the singers. Bellini's last opera, I Puritani (1835), was influenced by the dramatic style of French grand opera. Unlike that of his immediate predecessors, Rossini and Donizetti, his operatic output was small. It was characterized by careful composition, great attention to the relationship between words and music, and an originality of harmony that gave rise to his music's sensual, ecstatic quality. He greatly influenced the work of Verdi. See study by H. Weinstock (1971).
