Mr Wesley's Preachers
John Bennet
Methodist Archives and Research Centre Back to Main Page John Bennet (1714-59) was born at Chinley in Derbyshire. He was converted by the Methodist preacher David Taylor in 1742 and entered the itinerancy a year later, travelling entirely in the north. Bennet was responsible for introducing Methodism into several new areas and was held in high regard by the Wesleys. He also pioneered the use of quarterly meetings which subsequently became a characteristic feature of Wesleyan practice. Bennet left Methodism in 1752 after accusing John Wesley of preaching Roman Catholic doctrine. He subsequently became the pastor of an independent congregation in Cheshire.
Item 1
Diary of John Bennet, 6-8 November 1747
Bennet was a pioneer of the Lancashire 'Round'. In this entry he describes part of a preaching tour that he made of the country around Bolton and Manchester.
Item 2
Letter of Charles Wesley to John Bennet, 18 May 1752

page 2 of letter
Charles Wesley, as a high Anglican, did not fully approve of the concept of lay preaching. His relationship with many of the itinerants was characterized by mutual suspicion and Bennet was one of the few whom he regarded with respect and affection. They maintained a regular correspondence for several years, and it was with evident sadness that Wesley writes in this letter of the disagreements which would cause Bennet to abandon his association with the Wesleys. 'As to the separation what shall I say? If I had not power to hinder, I have not power to heal it. My only satisfaction is that I laboured all I could to prevent it.

John C. Bennett The History of the Saints
This book is fairly sensational when read in a vacuum. When you read it in conjunction with other books (that aren't too sanitized and "faith promoting" like the 7 volume "History of the Church" ), you will realize that some (if not much) of what Bennett says is true (including the details of the Nancy Rigdon and Sarah Pratt affairs). The behind the scenes detail provided are worth the price of the book alone (assuming you aren't planning on buying an original copy which is quite expensive). A letter he quotes (that the church leaders later denied existed) turned up in the official "History of the Church" as a letter of Joseph Smith used when the polygamy doctrine was being introduced. Bennett isn't much of a writer though. Most of the book merely quotes other books, newspaper articles, and letters. Bennett's biography (the book cover of which is shown to the left) has received rave reviews. Book of Abraham
