Komponisten William Sterndale Bennett Biographie Photo Gallery Home Page Die Biographie von William Sterndale Bennett Englischer Komponist: aus einer musikalischen Familie stammend, war Bennett bereits mit acht Jahren Chorknabe am King's College in Cambridge. Zwei Jahre später schickte man ihn an die Royal Academy of Music in London, wo er bei Crotch und Cirpiani Potter studierte. Sein erstes Klavierkonzert in d-moll op. 1, erregte die Aufmerksamkeit Mendelssohn s, der den jungen Komponisten 1836 nach Leipzig einlud. Vier Jahre später reiste er erneut nach Deutschland und befreundete sich mit Schumann , der ihm die „Symphonischen Etüden", op. 13, widmete. 1849 gründete Bennett die Londoner Bach -Gesellschaft, mit der er 1854 die „Matthäus-Passion" aufführte. 1856 wurde er Professor für Musik in Cambridge und zehn Jahre später Direktor der Royal Academy of Music. Parisina Overture William Sterndale Bennett's Parisina Overture by Christopher Gibbs "If only there were many artists working in the same spirit as Sterndale Bennett, no one would need fear any longer for the future of our art." Posterity may not share Robert Schumann's assessment of the music of the young English composer William Sterndale Bennett (1816-75), as it appreciates his prescient early discovery of Chopin ("Hats off, gentlemen, a genius!") or of the youthful Brahms, but Schumann's sustained acclaim for his friend's works points to an extraordinary talent whose gifts were unfortunately never fully realized. Mendelssohn, who became another prominent supporter, wrote in a letter: "I think [Bennett] the most promising young musician I know, not only in [England] but in Germany as well, and I am convinced if he does not become a very great musician, it is not God's will, but his own." Bennett wrote his first symphony at the age of 16 and over the next few years composed other ones, as well as concertos, that owe a clear debt to Mozart. His solo keyboard works and overtures, on the other hand, bow to Mendelssohn, whose Midsummer Night's Dream and Hebrides overtures he found particularly inspiring. In the mid-1830s Bennett produced three concert overtures, perhaps the first ever written by an English composer: The Wood-Nymphs, The Naiads, and the work we hear today, Parisina, which draws its title from Byron's poem (1816).

Boy Prodigies: Sir William Sterndale Bennett (England, 1816-75) Figure 1.This painting by J W Childe, dated 1832, shows William Sterndale Bennett aged 16 in the uniform of the Royal College of Music, London. Notice the high ruffled collar, short blue jacket, tight white trousers, and cap. Sir William Bennett, he never used Sterndale, was a teenage pianist and composer who especially impressed the Mendelssohnwho had himself been a child prodigy. His musical talent was also closely followed by another friend, Robert Schumann. Bennett was briefly popular as a child prodigy and youthful composer. He eventually directed his efforts at teaching. He became a Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge and later was made a Principal of the Royal Academy of Music. A painting by J.W. Childe, shows Bennett in 1832at age 16 in the uniform of the Royal College of Music, London. Family The family of William's father was eeply involved with music. His grandfather, John Bennett, was a lay clerk in the Cambridge college choirs of King's, St. John's, and Trinity. William's fatrher, Robert Bennett, was a pupil of Dr. Clarke. He served for many yearsas the organist for the parish church of Sheffield. He also composed songs, non of which were of great success or how much individuality. William's mother was Elizabeth, the daughter of James Donn, who at the time was curator of the Botanic Gardens at Cambridge. She mairred Robert Bennett in 1812.
