Berg, Alban (1885 - 1935)
The so-called Second Viennese School of Arnold Schoenberg has exercised a strong influence over the course of music in the 20th century. Schoenberg's pupils Alban Berg and Anton Webern, each with an individual musical language, put into practice the general principles of atonality, music without tonality or key-centre, and twelve-note music or serialism, music based on a series of the twelve semitones or half-steps of the modern scale. Opera Orchestral Music Berg's Violin Concerto and Chamber Concerto are an important part of 20th century repertoire. His Lyric Suite, for string quartet, was later orchestrated in part, while the delicately orchestrated Three Pieces of 1914-1915 form an occasional part of modern concert repertoire.

Alban Berg

Biography
Alban Berg
Composer Austria Born 9 Feb 1885
Died 24 Dec 1935
Alban Berg was the youngest of the three Austrian musicians who comprised the Second Viennese School, a group of progressives, all disenchanted with the sloppiness of the arts and the way they were taught in his native Vienna. He was not as rigid as Webern in his adherence to Schoenberg's orders regarding use of the tone row, and his music is therefore more approachable. His two operas 'Wozzeck' and 'Lulu' are masterpieces.
Berg's early songs give little indication of his future ability, but in 1904 he met Schoenberg who became his teacher, mentor and almost a father figure. When he and Webern met in the same class, Schoenberg was still composing in a Romantic vein, but the students followed their teacher through his changing styles until his composition of 1909, the Five Orchestral Pieces.
Berg's Piano Sonata Op 1 shows how he began to adopt Schoenberg's teaching in his own work, though on a small scale. His own writing was still partly melodic. In the Four Songs of Op 2, he moved further towards atonality, but with his remarkable String Quartet Op 3, Berg became a fully-fledged composer in the new medium - no longer a student of Schoenberg. In 1911, Berg married after a four-year courtship. He worked with a music publisher in Vienna, making a piano reduction of Schoenberg's immense 'Gurrelieder'. His String Quartet was performed without sufficient rehearsal and was not well received. Schoenberg was critical and, when he performed only two of the set of Berg's 'Five Altenberg Lieder' Op 4 in Berlin, Berg was upset. Not only was the set meant to be played together, but Berg was also criticised for making them too short for development: a slur, in view of the fragmentary pieces that Webern was writing. This criticism had a serious effect on Berg who never again allowed his Op 4 to be performed in public.
