musiker, tonsättare. Född i Stockholm d. 23 juli 1796. Kusin till B. 1 och son till kammarmusikus Kristian Friedrich Georg Berwald och hans hustru i andra giftet Brigitta Agneta Brunau Sin musikaliska uppfostran gjorde B. under Du Puy och ingick som violinist vid hofkapellet, när detta ställdes under hans lärares anförarekap 1812. Sedan han lämnat denna anställning, bosatte han sig 1829 i Berlin, där han komponerade operetten Der Verräther . Men kort därefter öppnade han ett ortopediskt institut som fortgick till 1840. 1841 komponerade han i Wien operan Estrella di Soria , som först 1862 uppfördes i Stockholm. År 1842 återkom han till fäderneslandet, komponerade operetterna Jag går i kloster och Modehandlerskan samt kantaterna Gustaf Adolf den stores seger och död vid Lützen och Nordiska Fantasibilder och lämnade åter Sverige 1846. Från Paris, hvarest han någon tid vistats, begaf han sig till Wien, där han med biträde af Jenny Lind första gången lät höra sin stora tonmålning

    d. April 3, 1868, Stockholm most important Swedish composer of the 19th century. Born into a renowned family of musicians, Berwald studied violin with his father and composition with J.B.E.     Zweeds componist en violist van Duitse afkomst.
    Berwald was een leerling van J.B.E. Du Puy. Hij begon als violist in het Koninklijk Zweeds Orkest en maakte vele reizen, die hem door alle muziekcentra van Noord-Europa brachten.
    In 1867 werd hij compositieleraar aan het conservatorium van Stockholm.
    Hij schreef orkestwerken (o.a. concerten en zes symfonieën, waarvan de vierde verloren is gegaan en waarvan vooral de Symphonie singulière , 1845, zeer bekend werd) en talrijke kamermuziekwerken (o.a. twee pianokwintetten, drie strijkkwartetten en een septet, 1817), enkele opera's en cantates.
    Met name door zijn verrassende symfonieën behoort Berwald tot de belangrijkste Scandinavische componisten uit de eerste helft van de 19e eeuw. Zijn vormexperimenten in de symfonische muziek wekten aanvankelijk echter scepsis.
    Zijn dramatische werken, waaraan hij zelf de grootste waarde hechtte, werden nooit of slechts gedeeltelijk opgevoerd.
