Reviews Sample Programme 2 Sonatas on the Mysteries of the Rosary Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber The Mystery Sonatas of Biber, recorded by Cordaria for Signum Records, constitute one of the pinnacles of the entire violin repertoire. Each one inspired by an episode in the life of Mary or Jesus, these sonatas express the entire gamut of emotions contained in the New Testament story. A unique blend of spirituality with human drama, the simple and the profound, the tender and the violent, the exalted and the despairing, they can be played in order, (for example all those associated with Easter or Christmas), or as a contrasting selection, such as the one shown below. To obtain effects normally impossible to achieve, the violin is tuned differently for each sonata. This device, known as ‘scordatura’, also produces acoustical changes in the instrument, which colour and heighten the drama, and the resultant difficulties for the player makes a performance of these works a comparative rarity. A reader, sometimes a member of the public, introduces each sonata with the appropriate Biblical text. Played generally without an interval, and with no applause until the end, this fascinating programme makes for an inspiring, exciting and intensely moving evening.

He was knighted in 1690 and thus entitled to sign his name "von Bibern". He died in 1704 in Salzburg. Biber was an important composer for the trumpet. Seit 1673 stand er im Dienst am Hofe des Fürsterzbischofs von Salzburg, wo er, abgesehen von Hof- und Konzertreisen, bis zu seinem Lebensende blieb. 1684 erhielt er den Titel des Truchsess. 1690 wurde er vom Kaiser Leopold I geadelt. Seine Konzertreisen ließen ihn an den europäischen Höfen als Komponist, vor allem aber auch als Violinvirtuose berühmt werden. Charles Burney bezeichnet Biber 100 Jahre später als den größten Geigenkünstler des 17. Jahrhunderts. EUR 15, Ausschnitt anhören Samuel Scheidt Samuel Scheidt, getauft am 3.11.1587 in Halle an der Saale, gestorben am 24.3.1654 ebenfalls in Halle, studierte bei dem großen niederländischen Orgelmeister Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck in Amsterdam. Enge Beziehungen verbanden Scheidt mit Michael Praetorius und Johann Hermann Schein. Neben weiteren Kompositionen veröffentlichte er 1624 sein bekanntestes Werk "Tabulatura nova" in drei Bänden, ein Markstein in der Geschichte der Orgelmusik.1628 übernahm er das eigens für ihn geschaffene Amt eines städtischen "Director musices" in Halle, durch das sich ihm eine glanzvolle Zeit eröffnete. Doch nach seiner Entlassung geriet er in der Zeit des Dreißigjährigen Krieges in große Not und starb schließlich vereinsamt und vergessen. Seine Hauptbedeutung liegt sicher in seinen Orgelwerken, die ihn zum bedeutendsten Orgelmeister zwischen Frescobaldi und Johann Sebastian Bach machten.
