From: Rhoda Love published in Oregon Flora Newsletter, Volume 3, Number 2, Corvallis, Oregon, 1997 page 9. Working on the pome-fruited members of the Rose Family for the Oregon Flora Checklist, I ran into a controversy which has apparently been brewing (like apple cider?) since pre-Linnaean times: namely, should apples and pears both be placed in the pear genus, Pyrus My immediate task in this case, was to provide a name for the wild crabapple of the Pacific Coast. This is our pretty little dark-fruited tree which Peck (

Album Notes The critically acclaimed Chicago-based ensemble HIS MAJESTIE'S CLERKES is one of the few choirs in America that specializes in historically informed performances of Renaissance masterworks, yet has the versatility to present 19th- and 20th-century music in convincing performances. Since its debut in 1982, the ensemble has expanded its repertory and won itself a steadily growing audience. Distinguished guest conductors who have led the group include Sir David Willcocks, Simon Preston, and Paul Hillier, who in 1990 chose His Majestic's Clerkes to join with The Hilliard Ensemble in the first American performances of Arvo Part's St. John Passion.
The Continental Harmony (1794), published as an act of charity to the then-impoverished Billings, reveals no flagging of his powers. Creation, an exuberant fuging-tune, changes meter to marked effect, ending with an unusually long, unrepeated fuging section. In "0 praise the Lord of Heaven," text declamation gradually accelerates - from iambic movement, to duple quarter-notes, then eighths - as if God's many glorifiers were passing by in quickening procession. Here as throughout his career, Billings Sought to capture in a fusion of word, sound, and time, the essence of the spiritual texts he set to music.

    I N M EMORIAM LIEUTENANT WILLIAM BEEKER BILLINGS was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was killed in action 1942 in the South Pacific. A Purdue University graduate of 1938, he earned his in 1940 at Pensacola, Florida. Thereafter he served on the U.S.S. Indianapolis as a naval aviator. The following poem, written during his college life, relates to his forebears, settlers of Indiana in 1819. M.B. A State Is Born T HE forest great grew hushed and still,
    Intense of ear, and vigilant;
    It sensed within its vast domain

    The chatter of facetious squirrels,
    The jabber of blue-hooded jays,
    The bell-like calls of cardinals red;
    And voicings of the many folk Of thick entangled underbrush, Engaged in playin tasks of like; And here and there a splash of tints: A brilliant plumed denizen Has flashed its way through golden beams Of filtered sunlight, agitated

    Historical Society Canton Inspired The Country In Music Canton has long held a position of historical importance in the history of our country. One unlikely field in which the Town surpassed its neighbors was in the field of music. At one time Canton was the inspiration of the country in all areas of musical endeavor. Historical records indicate that as early as 1762, singing meetings were popular in Stoughton (Canton). About that time the people formed an organization for "practicing vocal music". When the Town was besieged by an epidemic of small pox in 1764, it became necessary to notify the Bridgewater singers that they best remain at home until the plague was gone. In those days the singing meetings were held in private homes. Neighbors were often heard to speak of the "prodigious jangling" of the music makers. When William Billings and Mary Leonard were married in December, 1764, about forty guest, including John Kenney, who was an outstanding bass, gathered for the festivities, and enjoyed "much singing". During the year 1767, the Braintree Singers journeyed to Canton for an evening of song and music, but unfortunately a religious debate erupted into an argument and the pleasure of the occasion was lost. Later in the year, the group returned for a celebration at the old May Tavern. This time the music started immediately and "great love and harmony" was evident throughout the inn.
