Ronald Binge This page is dedicated to the memory of Ronald Binge, composer, theatre organist , inventor of great musical arrangements for light music, film plays, and other orchestrations. RONALD BINGE 1910-1979 Born in Derby (UK), Binge was one of the most respected and successful English composers of his generation. His father, a capable pianist, died in 1920 of wounds received during the war, leaving the family in straitened circumstances, without money to pay for Binge to attend music college. Instead, he obtained work as a cinema organist , which enabled him to learn a great deal of light repertoire and to develop his skill as an arranger (the cinema had a small orchestra, for whom he wrote). After a stint as an orchestral pianist with the high-caliber light orchestra at Great Yarmouth, he left for London and in 1935 his association with Mantovani began - from this time. Binge did many of the Mantovani orchestra’s arrangements, as well as writing much music of his own, some of which was recorded and broadcast. He joined the RAF on the outbreak of the Second World War and took charge of the choir at his station in Blackpool, where Sidney Torch (also a

Ronald Binge (b Derby, 15 July 1910; d Ringwood, Hampshire, 6 September 1979) Of specialist British light music composers born during the twentieth century, perhaps none produced as many well loved pieces or was as technically proficient as Ronald Binge. He was born in Derby - birthplace also of another eminent British light music composer, Percy Fletcher (1879-1932). In 1920 the death of his father (a capable pianist) forced him to become the family breadwinner. His musical education thus came largely from practical experience gained as a cinema organist in Derby and from 1931 as pianist with a light orchestra in Great Yarmouth. Pacific 1860 (1946), for which the Mantovani orchestra was in the pit. Mantovani’s own big breakthrough then came in 1951, and it was Ronald Binge who was responsible. He had devised the "cascading strings" effect whereby the string section was divided into several parts, each entering a fraction apart to create the sort of reverberation that might be experienced in cathedrals. It proved a huge popular success as applied by Mantovani to the song ‘Charmaine’. This success led to a long-running radio series for Mantovani, during which he introduced various Binge compositions.
