Dance Scenes Ballet for orchestra

Written in 1939 for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo (ballet to be called "La Vie") but never staged in the composer's lifetime. Score rediscovered in 1976. First choreography in 1991 by Francois Klaus at Stadttheater Bern in ballet entitled "Juans Traum". A new recording has just been released on Largo.

He went to Berlin in 1922 to study architecture and mathematics. He studied composition with Koch from 1924 to 1926, and then at Berlin University until 1931. In 1938 he was made director of a composition class at Dresden Conservatory, but in 1939 he relinquished the post because of disagreement with the Nazis. He returned to teaching in Berlin after the war, becoming professor at the Berlin Hochschule in 1948 and director there from 1953 to 1970. He lectured in Sahburg and in the USA, and received many awards; many of his composition pupils have achieved fame.

† 30. Jan. 1975 in Berlin Als Sohn wohlhabender deutsch-baltischer Eltern wurde Boris Blacher am 6.Januar 1903 in Niu-chang in China geboren. Mit 10 Jahren bekam er den ersten Geigen- und Harmonielehreunterricht. Ab 1914 besuchte er die russischen Realgymnasien in Irkutsk und Charbin (ab 1919), an denen er Musik studierte. 1922 kam er dann nach Umwegen über Marseille und Paris nach Berlin, wo er zunächst an der Technischen Hochschule Architektur und Mathematik studierte. 1924 wechselte er dann an die Hochschule für Musik um Komposition bei Friedrich Ernst Koch zu studieren. Mit der Uraufführung seiner Concertanten Musik für Orchester op. 10 hatte er 1937 einen öffentlichen Erfolg. 1938 berief man ihn als Kompositionslehrer an das Landeskonservatorium in Dresden. 1945 ging er als Kompositionslehrer an das Internationale Musikinstitut in Berlin-Zehlendorf. Ab 1948 war er dann als Professor für Komposition an der Hochschule für Musik in Berlin tätig. Nebenher arbeitete Blacher ab 1960 mit dem Studio für elektronische Musik (TU Berlin) zusammen, an der er über experimentelle Musik Vorlesungen abhielt. Blacher erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, unter anderem den Berliner Kunstpreis für Musik (1951), den Musikpreis der Stadt Köln (1960) und den Großen Kunstpreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalens (1961). Außerdem war Blacher seit 1955 Mitglied der Akademie der Künste Berlin, von 1968 bis 1971 Präsident, und ab 1971 Ehrenpräsident. Er starb am 30. Januar 1975 in Berlin.

His career was interrupted by the intervention of National Socialism, but resumed in 1945. He was greatly influenced by French composers, Les Six in particular.
