Arthur Bliss was born in London on 2 August 1891. For over 50 years he was a familiar figure on the English musical scene. He was educated at Rugby and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he studied with Charles Wood. He attended the Royal College of Music for a single term before the First World War broke out and interrupted his studies for the duration. After demobilization in 1919, he soon won a reputation as a cosmopolitan and advanced composer. In Madame Noy , the Rhapsody for Two Voices with chamber ensemble, and Rout , he experimented with instrumental uses of the voice, in wordless vocalization and nonsense syllables. In 1921, Bliss became conductor of the Portsmouth Philharmonic Society, two years later moving to California where he continued to conduct. The Introduction and Allegro (1926), dedicated to the Philadelphia Orchestra and Stokowski, was the first of many works written for virtuoso ensembles or soloists a series that included the Clarinet and Oboe Quintets , the Viola Sonata , and the Piano Violin and Cello Concertos 1930 saw the production, at the Norwich Festival, of one of the most deeply personal of Bliss' works, the choral symphony

b. d. Arthur Bliss was born in London on 2 August 1891. For over 50 years he was a familiar and central figure on the English musical scene. He was educated at Rugby and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he studied with Charles Wood. He attended the Royal College of Music for a single term before the First World War broke out and interrupted his studies for the duration.
After demobilisation in 1919, he soon won a reputation as a cosmopolitan and advanced composer. In Madame Noy (1918), Rhapsody (1919) for two voices and chamber ensemble, and Rout (1920), he experimented with instrumental uses of the voice, in wordless vocalisation and nonsense syllables. In 1921, Bliss became conductor of the Portsmouth Philharmonic Society and two years later he moved to California. The Introduction and Allegro (1926), dedicated to the Philadelphia Orchestra and Stokowski, was the first of many works written for virtuoso ensembles or soloists, a series that included the Clarinet and Oboe Quintets, the Viola Sonata, and the Piano, Violin and Cello Concertos.
1930 saw the production, at the Norwich Festival, of one of the most deeply personal of Bliss' works, the choral symphony Morning Heroes (1930), written as a tribute to those who died in World War I. In 1934-35 he moved into a new field: ballet and film music. In the music for H.G. Wells' Things to Come (1935) and the ballet Checkmate (1937), Bliss showed striking ability to write vivid illustrative music in a relatively simple and direct style.

Arthur Bliss
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Born in 1891 of an English father and American mother, Arthur Bliss was destined to display characteristics of both nations, his profound romanticism balanced by an unquenchable energy and optimism. After studying at the Royal College of Music under Stanford , he served as an infantry officer in the First World War. With the return of peace , Bliss’ career took off rapidly as a composer of what were, for British audiences, startlingly new pieces often for unusual ensembles, such as a concerto for wordless tenor voice, piano and strings, and ‘Rout’ for soprano and chamber orchestra, in which the voice sings phonetic sounds rather than words. Much of his early music shows the influence of Stravinsky and Debussy . A landmark was his ‘Colour Symphony’ of 1922 which explores the idea of the musical associations of different colours.

Sir Arthur Bliss, Master of the Queen's Music in Great Britain from 1953 until his death, eventually followed the late romantic tradition of Elgar in English music, after a more controversial period of composition in youth. In accordance with the perceived duties of his official position, he wrote various ceremonial pieces, in addition to music for the concert-hall, theatre and cinema. The one-step was a dance which became popular around 1910, later developing into the Bunny Hug, the Turkey Trot and the Rag. Bliss’ dance, entitled with his own name, is dedicated to Corelli Windeat and his London Dance Orchestra and was for a Punch and Judy Ball at the Savoy Hotel. In The Star of January 27, 1923, Bliss tells how he came to write the piece:
“I have been chaffed so much about my name that I’m calling it Bliss. My friends tell me that I was prophetically hinted at by Wordsworth in his immortal line ‘Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive’. I think musicians should be able to write any kind of music – opera, oratorio, chamber, songs, or even ragtime.”
The piece starts out with some modern bitonality but soon settles down to a diatonic swagger.

    Biography
    Arthur Bliss
Composer England Born 2 Aug 1891
    Died 27 Mar 1975
Bliss was born and died in London, but wasn't quite the all-Englishman he seemed: he had an American father, an American wife, and spent long periods in the States. Perhaps that contributed to his self-confidence and optimistic outlook - and pioneering spirit. He is remembered now chiefly for his film score for the 1936 production 'Things to Come', which established the soundtrack as a serious genre; his unusual 'Colour Symphony' of 1922 (each movement expressing the essence of a different colour) is worth a listen. His finest work is arguably 'Morning Heroes', a choral symphony of 1930, though his ballets 'Checkmate', 'Miracle in the Gorbals' and 'Adam Zero' (1937-46) are all highly regarded.

Selection of music from the film of the same name. Length variously 11-22 minutes depending on arrangement. 'The March' (4 minutes) is often played or performed by itself.
Bliss's score for Alexander Korda's science-fiction film of the HG Wells story was a turning point in the British film industry and for British composers. From now on, the new genre of film music was no longer looked down on; it was a legitimate art form, and Bliss - an accomplished if revolutionary composer in the concert hall - blazed the trail for composers such as Malcolm Arnold and Ron Goodwin.
The commission came about when HG Wells approached Bliss after attending one of his lectures. Bliss aimed to fuse sound and vision, rather than simply accompany, though he said that the music should also stand alone on its merits.
He was as good as his word, and though no complete recording of the film score exists, various arrangements and selections exist, the 1975 Christopher Palmer version being well regarded. The crackling energy and broad nobility of the 'March' has made it a concert favourite.
The film itself is now recognised as a classic, though its special effects and toga-party costumes look charmingly primitive now and it's only occasionally dusted off for TV showings.

Karadar Bertoldi Ensemble Studio Informatico Anesin
