John Blow
English composer and organist. He probably received early music training at Magnus Song School in Newark; later he was a choirboy at the Chapel Royal. He was appointed organist at Westminster Abbey in 1668 at age 19. In 1674 he became a Gentleman of the Chapel and the same year succeeded Pelham Humfrey as Master of the Children. This position he held for the rest of his life. Among his pupils were William Croft and Henry Purcell . In 1676 he was made one of the Chapel Royal organists; the following year he received the D.Mus. from the Dean of Canterbury. During the next years he composed many of his best-known works, including most of the anthems with string accompaniment and the masque Venus and Adonis. He was appointed choirmaster at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1687. In 1695 he was named royal instrument tuner; finally in 1699 or 1700 he became the official Chapel Royal composer, the first to hold such a post. He composed eleven services (edited in William Boyce, Cathedral Music, 3 vols., London, 1760-73); some 115 anthems (eleven are in Boyce's collection); ten Latin church works; Venus and Adonis;

Blow, John (1649 - 1708)
John Blow was the most significant English composer in the generation before Henry Purcell, ten years his junior, whom he outlived by thirteen years. Born in 1649, the year of the execution of King Charles I, he was young enough to benefit from the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, with the revival of church music. Dramatic Works Blow's masque Venus and Adonis, a charming masque designed for the king's entertainment, influenced Purcell's better known short opera Dido and Aeneas, by the side of which it deserves a place. Sacred and Secular Vocal Music Like Purcell Blow wrote music mourning the death of Queen Mary, a monarch for whom he had six years earlier written coronation music, when, with her Dutch husband William of Orange, she had succeeded her Catholic father, King James II. His works include a quantity of vocal music, sacred and secular, the former including a well known setting of the Lord is my shepherd. Anthems include the distinguished I beheld, and lo! a great multitude, a verse anthem, with the customary instrumental accompaniment. For the coronation of King James II in 1685 he wrote the anthem God spake sometime in visions.

See A. Kippis, Biographia Britannica (1780), vol. ii. For an account of Blount’s family see Robert Clutterbuck. History and Antiquities of the County of Hertford (1815), vol. i. pp. 207-2f2. For a defence of Blount, see General Marcus J. Wright’s Account of the Life and Services of William Blount (Washington, D. C., 2884). BLOUSE, a word (taken from the French) used for any loosely fitting bodice belted at the waist. In France it meant originally the loose upper garment of linen or cotton, generally blue, worn. by French workmen to preserve their clothing, and, by transference, the workman himself. BLOW, JOHN (1648—1708), English musical composer, was born in 1648, probably at North Collingham in Nottinghamshire. He became a chorister of the chapel royal, and distinguished himself by his proficiency in music; he composed several anthems at an unusually early age, including Lord, Thou host been our refuge; Lord, rebuke me not; and the so-called “ club anthem,” I will always give thanks, the last in collaboration with Pelham Humphrey and William Turner, either in honour of a victory over the Dutch in 1665, or—more probably—simply to commemorate the friendly intercourse of the three choristers. To this time also belongs the composition of a two-part setting The blow-gun of the Borneo Dyaks, called sum pitan, is from
