Luigi Boccherini Luigi Boccherini was born in Lucca, Italy, on 19 February 1743. He was taught music at a young age by his father, who was a professional bass player. Also, he was taught by the Abbé Vannucci, chapel-master to the Archbishop. Boccherini proved to be an extremely skilled pupil, and in 1757 he was sent to Rome to perfect his technique under expert instruction. He returned to Lucca as a professional musician of the highest order, and he joined the town theatre orchestra as cellist. At the same time, he introduced himself to his fellow citizens as a composer by giving a special concert - with the cooperation of Filippo Manfredi, the violinist - devoted entirely to his own sonatas. The success of this concert was so great that the two decided to tour the principle cities of France. Their reception at all their destinations surpassed their wildest expectations, including Paris, which they reached in 1768. The fame of the two had become so large that the Ambassador of Spain in Paris invited them to come to Madrid. They were disappointed by this tour because their reception was not half so welcoming as they had anticipated, and royal patronage, which had been promised to them, was not forthcoming. For Boccherini, however, there were consolations. The Emperor of Prussia was impressed with his abilities both as virtuoso and composer, and engaged him as a chamber-composer at a generous annual salary. For several years, Boccherini held this position, enjoying during this period of comfort and high esteem. With the death of his royal benefactor, however, Boccherini was compelled to seek employment elsewhere, and he decided to return to Spain.

Boccherini, Luigi (1743 - 1805) The reputation of Boccherini rivalled that of Haydn, if the nick- name "the wife of Haydn" may be accepted as evidence of contemporary fame. He was a virtuoso cellist and worked first in his native Lucca and then in Vienna, before moving to Paris and thence to Spain, where he seems to have remained from 1768 until his death. There he was in the service of the Infante Don Luis and various other patrons, and was appointed court composer to King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, himself a cellist, although there is no evidence of his actual presence at Potsdam. He died in apparent poverty in 1805. Chamber Music Boccherini is popularly known as the composer of the famous Minuet, taken from one of his quintets, written for a string quartet with an additional cello. The set of Quintets for string quartet and guitar includes a thoroughly Spanish Fandango. document.write(""); BOCCHERINI, LUIGI In 1363 Boccaccio went on a visit to Naples to the seneschal Acciajuoli (the same Florentine who had in 1344 persuaded the elder Boccaccio to permit his son’s return to Naples), who commissioned him to write the story of his deeds of valour. On his arrival, however, the poet was treated with shameful neglect, and revenged himself by denying the possibility of relating any valorous deeds for want of their existence. This declaration, it must be confessed, came somewhat late, but it was provoked by a silly attack on the poet himself by one of the seneschal’s indiscreet friends. In his last will Boccaccio left his library to his father confessor, and after his decease to the convent of Santo Spirito in Florence. His small property he bequeathed to his brother Jacopo. His own natural children had died before him. He himself died on the 21st of December 1375 at Certaldo, and was buried in the church of SS. Jacopo e Filippo of that town. On his tombstone was engraved the epitaph composed by himself shortly before his death. It is calm and dignified, worthy indeed of a great life with a great purpose.
