Biography
Luigi Boccherini
Composer Italy Born 19 Feb 1743
Died 28 May 1805
Boccherini was known more as a performer than a composer in his lifetime, but his Minuet in G has become one of the world's most performed pieces. He was known as the 'wife of Haydn' because his style was so close to his near-contemporary - he also established the string quartet form that Haydn perfected. Boccherini composed huge quantities of music, including 124 quintets in addition to his Quintet G275 Op 11 No 5 (from which comes the well-known Minuet in G), not to mention over a hundred quartets and 60 trios.
Luigi Boccherini was taught music at a young age by his father, who was a professional bass player and in 1757 went to Rome to for expert instruction. He returned to join the town orchestra in his native Lucca as a cellist, now a highly accomplished virtuoso and composer. A concert of his music proved so successful that he and a colleague toured France, with equally enthusiastic results - even in Paris, which they reached in 1768.
An invitation to Madrid followed, and though the trip was disappointing, the Emperor of Prussia took him on as a chamber-composer at a generous salary. Boccherini worked in comfort until his employer died, when he returned to Spain only to spend several years in Madrid in obscurity and poverty. The only consolation in his dark and dingy room was music.

Luigi Boccherini was born in Lucca, Italia, on 19 February 1743. He was taught music at a young age by his father, who was a professional bass player. Also, he was taught by the Abbé Vannucci, chapel-master to the Archbishop. Boccherini proved to be an extremely skilled pupil, and in 1757 he was sent to Roma to perfect his technique under expert instruction. He returned to Lucca as a professional musician of the highest order, and he joined the town theatre orchestra as violoncellist. At the same time, he introduced himself to his fellow citizens as a composer by giving a special concert - with the cooperation of Filippo Manfredi, the violinist - devoted entirely to his own sonatas. The success of this concert was so great that the two decided to tour the principle cities of France. Their reception at all their destinations surpassed their wildest expectations, including Paris, which they reached in 1768. The fame of the two had become so large that the Ambassador of España in Paris invited them to come to Madrid.
