In December 1960 the board of supervisors suggested that the film industry put up half the cost of the project. This caused the HMA concern and was an early warning sign of the troubles to come. Over the next few years the HMA raised nearly $500,000 and gifts continued to accumulate. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held at the proposed site on October 20, 1963. Debs and Lesser, along with Gene Autry, Walt Disney, Jack Warner, Mary Pickford, Gregory Peck, Gloria Swanson, and others, addressed an audience of several thousand people. Early the following year, financier Bart Lytton, a founding member of the museum, publicly demanded an investigation of HMA finances. Despite his claims, the board of supervisors approved the museum lease. A county-condemned building on the site necessitated the eviction of its occupant, who consequently held sheriff's deputies at bay with a shotgun for several weeks until his arrest in April 1964. The dramatic standoff received much attention from the media, and taxpayers began to question the expenditure of public funds. The attorney for the evicted man immediately sued the county to prevent the sale of bonds to finance construction. The supervisors appointed a review board, headed by Lytton (who some claimed was disgruntled because he hadn't been appointed to the commission), that reported the HMA was operating at a deficit.

U trip to Asia strengthens 'bonds of loyalty'
Tang Peisong, 94 and battling heart failure, was in a hospital bed in Beijing when University President Nils Hasselmo and a University delegation came to award him an honorary degree. Margaret Carlson, executive director of the Minnesota Alumni Association, led the group in softly singing the Minnesota Rouser. The father of plant physiology in China, Tang is "one of the national treasures," says Hasselmo, and awarding the degree was the most emotional experience of the trip to three Asian countries (the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, and Korea) in November. As the University increases its emphasis on its role in the global community, the trip was intended to build partnerships and sign agreements with Asian universities, strengthen ties with alumni, and discuss internships in Asia for University students. YeeLeng Hang: staff member models partnership
As the University becomes more internationally focused, the contributions of staff from diverse cultures becomes increasingly important. One of those staff members is YeeLeng Hang, who began at the University October 1. As student/government leadership consultant, Hang is responsible for advising the undergraduate student government, the Minnesota Student Association (MSA). A Laotian native, Hang says he is the only Asian American person to hold such a position in a Big Ten university. Hang's route to the University began when he fled his native Laos as a young child with his family, which included eight siblings. After staying in Thai refugee camps, the family moved to the small town of Richville, Michigan, when Hang was 9.

Jamie O’Boyle / Margaret King I would like you to introduce yourselves and give us a brief history of your experience] (Jamie) My name is Jamie O’Boyle. I’m a cultural analyst with Cultural Studies and Analysis in Philadelphia. That’s a think tank that works to determine how people perceive value in a product and how they recognize that value when they see it.
(Margaret) My name is Margaret King. I have studied popular cultural for about 25 years, and I ‘m interested in finding the connections between cultural expression and the way that people do business in solving problems.
What exactly is it that you do when you work with companies and bring in American culture?] [Jamie] We do problem framing and definition . We use popular culture as a database because popular culture is very hard to manipulate, um, there’s a lot of systems in operation, very complex systems when you are dealing with popular culture and you can’t at it from using focus groups or traditional questioning methods cause they operate at invisible levels so we study patterns in popular culture. We look for the stories that are repeated from generation to generation for a long span of time say 200 years in the case of American culture or 3000 years in the case of Chinese culture and we look at the way those stories are evoked with each generation and what some of the patterns are and we can build a pretty consistent database of things that are core values of people and how they identify and associate those core values with different types of products. In educational institutions, which we also do work for, in exhibits and patterns, - So, anyway, we use an awful lot of techniques we picked up here and through some of our own colleagues to track these patterns and from that we can extrapolate exactly how you frame the situation in the consumer market. How do you frame a particular problem in terms that the customer would recognize is true?

By Michael@paulmichaelsmith.org.uk So you may not have heard of Kathryn Hope, Elizabeth Anderson, Margaret Fort and Deborah Longbottom. As far as I know, none of them has become well known like me. I expect and fervently hope that they are all well and living somewhere in the sun in blissful happiness. My contribution to their lives was short of minimal. Theirs to mine has been a continuing miracle. I was 7 or 8 when I first realised that Deborah Longbottom was different from the rest of us. Though in my class at school, she towered above us all with a majesty she may never actually have understood. One morning, to show my undying affection for Debs (as I called her in my head - if I had called her that in real life she would have struck me with a javelin), I brought to school a broach that my mother had foolishly left behind on her dressing table and a bunch of dandelions picked on the walk to school and adding what I thought to be the final flourish. I walked up to her. I was eloquent as ever. "Want these?"

    REFORMING SOCIAL SECURITY
    JANUARY 13, 1997
TRANSCRIPT Last week a bipartisan commission offered three alternatives for redesigning the Social Security system so it will be able to cover the retirement needs of Baby Boomers. The plans were quite different, but they had one dramatic new element in common. All three anticipated investing some Social Security reserves in the stock market. Margaret Warner leads a debate on the merits of that idea following a background report by Paul Solman of WGBH Boston. A RealAudio version of this NewsHour segment is available. January 13, 1997

MARGARET WARNER: Now to our discussion. Theda Skocpol is a sociology professor at Harvard University who has written about the history of American social policy. Mickey Levy is chief financial economist at NationsBanc Capital Markets, a Wall Street investment firm. Estelle James is an economist at the World Bank who advises other countries on designing and reforming their national retirement system. And Henry Aaron, also an economist, is senior fellow of economic studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington. Welcome, all of you. Mickey Levy, starting with you, let’s look at the broad question before we get into individual components, as we’ve just seen, there are so many different options. Should at least a portion of Social Security taxes be taken out of government bonds and put into the stock market? You think so. Why?
