    William Boyce
English composer and organist. He began as a choirboy at St. Paul's Cathedral; later he studied organ and harmony with Maurice Greene , the cathedral organist. His first position was as organist at the Earl of Oxford's chapel in London; he served there until 1736, when he was appointed both composer to the Chapel Royal and organist at St. Michael's, Comhill. From 1737 he conducted the Music Meeting. Probably during the late 1730s he composed his first stage work, the masque Peleus and Thetis. In 1747 his trio sonatas op. 1 were greeted with wide public acclaim, and in 1749 he received the Bachelor and Doctor of Music degrees from Oxford. Two years after Greene's death in 1755 Boyce was appointed Master of the King's Music in his place; in 1758 he was also named one of the organists of the Chapel Royal. As a result of growing deafness, in 1764 he was dismissed from his duties at All Hallow's Church, and he resigned from St. Michael's in 1768. He spent his last years compiling the 3-volume Cathedral Music (publ. 1760, 1768, and 1773), an important collection of music by Purcell Gibbons Blow , and others. Boyce composed seventeen stage works (most for Drury Lane Theatre); other vocal works, including services, anthems, and odes; instrumental music, including eight symphonies op. 2 (London, 1760), twelve overtures (London, 1770), and the Concerto in D minor (Worcester Overture).

WILLIAM D. BOYCE Story of the "Unknown Scout" The British capital lay in the grip of a dense "pea soup" fog. It had rolled in during the night and had enveloped the whole city in its smoky yellowness. The famous London buses crawled cautiously along but the traffic had come to an almost complete standstill. Street lamps had been lit before noon. They shone with a feeble glow that penetrated only a few feet into the murkiness. A man walking slowly along the poorly lit street stopped under a lamp post and tried to orient himself. He had the feeling that he had gone astray but in what direction was he to turn? A dark figure emerged from the gloom. A boy moved past the man - then turned and came back. "Can I help you, sir?" the youngster asked. "You certainly can," said the man. "I have a business appointment somewhere around here. I'll be much obliged if you'll tell me how to get there." There was no mistaking the man's nationality - he spoke with a decided American accent. "If you'll give me the address I'll take you there."

    Boyce, William (1711 - 1779)
William Boyce is among the most important English composers of the late Baroque period, 25 years younger than Handel, whom he outlived by twenty years. He was a rival of Arne and in 1757 became Master of the King's Music. His works include a variety of music for both church and theatre. Instrumental Music Boyce's instrumental music includes a set of Eight Symphonies in eight parts, published in 1760, compositions that reflect the changing tastes of the time. His set of Twelve Trio Sonatas followed a fashion that had started with Corelli in the previous century and was now coming to an end. Vocal and Choral Music One of Boyce's best known songs is the patriotic Heart of Oak. His church music still retains a place in Anglican cathedral repertoire, strengthened by the appearance of his collected Cathedral Music.

William Boyce was born in 1711 in Maiden Lane (now Skinners' Lane) in the City of London. His exact date of birth is unknown but we do know that he was baptised on 11th September, 1711 at the church opposite his home: St. James' Garlickhythe. As three, ten and eight days separate the respective births and baptisms of his brother and sisters, it is reasonable to assume that William Boyce was born at the beginning of September 1711. The church of St. James still stands today; just north-west of Southwark Bridge. It is sometimes referred to as 'Wren's Lantern' on account of its shape and the amount of light admitted through its large number of windows. William was the son John Boyce, a cabinet maker, and his wife Elizabeth. They had moved to Maiden Lane in the first half of 1711 shortly before William's birth. The exact location of their home in Maiden Lane (Skinners' Lane) can be identified as on the north side just east of Doby Court. William was the last to be born of their four children. In February 1722 William Boyce's father was appointed Beadle to the Joiners' Company. The post carried with it accommodation for the Beadle's family in the Joiners' Hall. When the Boyces moved in to the Hall in May 1723, William was 11, his older sisters Joanne and Elizabeth were 19 and 13 respectively and his brother John nearly 17.

    The Eight Symphonies Introduction
    William Boyce's eight symphonies
are not only the most well known and most recorded of all his works, but are also probably amongst the most famous, most played and most loved of any English Baroque musical work.
They were first published by John Walsh (Handel's publisher) in 1760 but each one was in fact composed over the previous 21 years as either an ode to a vocal or stage work or as an overture.
At the time of publication Boyce was 49 and had begun to gradually withdraw from public musical life - probably because of his increasing deafness. These pieces were no doubt chosen for publication as a single set to represent his finest and most famous orchestral works.
Newspapers at this time show a strong growth in musical societies and public orchestral concerts and Boyce's symphonies were presumably published to meet the correspondingly high demand for this type of work. The title page (from the first publication in London in January 1760) reads:
    EIGHT SYMPHONYS in eight parts
Six for Violins, Hoboys, or German Flutes, and Two for Violins, French Horns and
