Boyce, William English composer, born in London. He was Master of the King's Music and composer and organist of the Chapel Royal. Increasing deafness compelled him to give up most of his work after 1769. His 3-volume Cathedral Music (1760-78), a collection of church music by English composers such as William Byrd Henry Purcell , and Thomas Tallis , was used in England for more than a century. Boyce was the foremost British composer of his day and one of the few to write symphonies. His anthems include "O, Where Shall Wisdom Be Found" and "By the Waters of Babylon." He also composed for the theater.

The English Orpheus 38. Trio Sonatas by william boyce. THE PARLEY OF INSTRUMENTSTHE PARLEY OF INSTRUMENTS BAROQUE ORCHESTRA PETER HOLMAN director. Contents
http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/details/67151.asp
2 Compact Discs CDA67151/2 The music of William Boyce has always retained a special place in the English repertory, it being written of him that, 'there is an original and sterling merit in his productions, founded as much on the study of our own old masters, as on the best models of other countries' (Burney). This recording is of the Twelve Sonatas for Two Violins with a Bass for the Violoncello or Harpsicord, published in 1747, and three unpublished Trio Sonatas newly edited from a manuscript in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. These particularly attractive works boast a wide range of stylistic features and forms and for many years held centre-stage in England as masterpieces in the genre. The performances are divided between The Parley of Instruments Baroque Orchestra and the one-to-a-part Parley of Instruments, so ensuring over two hours of varied and inspiring listening. Recorded on 15-21 October 1995

Thompson was born May 13,1869, in Alder Gulch, Virginia City, Montana. He would later use the name of his birthplace for his new, grand home in Yonkers. His early years were typical of mining towns of that generation. In 1887, at 18, he was sent east to the Phillips Exeter Academy, and upon completion of his studies there enrolled in the Columbia University School of Mines. He later returned to Montana, and was employed by his father in the family's copper and silver mines in Montana and Arizona. On February 6, 1895, he married Gertrude Hickman in Butte. Encouraged by success, the couple relocated to New York where he joined the Curb Exchange. Exeter classmates and club members soon introduced him to influential New Yorkers. As he was one of the few people on Wall Street with a comprehensive knowledge of the mining business, he became a successful mining promoter and developed mining properties in Canada and the west and southwest of the U.S. Later he acquired diamond mines in Africa. The Guggenheim Brothers, J.P. Morgan and Bernard Baruch were his sometime business partners. He made an astounding fortune. Although Thompson was only 43 in 1912 when he built a landmark in Yonkers, his energy and spirit drove him to new challenges.

    80. William D. Boyce - New Biography By Janice A. Petterchak
The book is scheduled for publication by Legacy Press in early 2003.New Biography william D. boyce Founder, Boy Scouts of America.
    http://www.homestead.com/biogwriter/Current.html
In 1915 Boyce founded the little-remembered but, at the time, highly popular Lone Scouts of America. Through Lone Scout magazine published at his Chicago building, young boys (and a few girls) learned outdoor activities, wrote articles for the magazine, and performed patriotic activities during World War I. When Boyce relinquished the organization to the Boy Scouts nine years later, nearly 500,000 youngsters had participated in Lone Scouting.
With his publishing successes came the wealth that supported world travels (two African safaris, on the Lusitania
A successful entrepreneur of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, he became an acknowledged business and civic leader. His buildings in downtown Chicago were designed by renowned architects Henry Ives Cobb and Daniel H. Burnham. But, perhaps because his death occurred on the brink of the Great Depressiona time of vast economic and political changes, W. D. Boyce has been virtually forgotten in American history. Yet his accomplishments were many, and his lasting legacy of the twentieth century is the Scouting program he initiated and helped finance through the early years, a program that today serves more than four million American youth.
